Set as Default Program

In previous versions of XML Notepad, I was able to set it as the default program for opening XML files. I no longer seem to be able to do that. The right-click -> Open With -> Choose Default Program allows me to browse for the executable, but does not select it. Set Default Programs in control panel does not list it.

I'm using Win7 Home Premium 64-bit.

Yeah, looks like Windows 10 has recently made this a lot more difficult. There used to be an option in Windows 10 where you could "browse the PC" for more programs, then point it to xmlnotepad.exe and you'd be good, but I'm not seeing that option any more, windows 10 only seems to list these options:

But I was able to make it work by doing this. First you need to find where xmlnotepad lives on your machine, you can do that by launching it, run Task Manager, click "Details" tab, find xmlnotepad in the list, right click to bring up the Properties and copy the full location text, which is something like this:

C:\Users\Chris\AppData\Local\Apps\2.0\60MPBT3D.ELV\H2QGHQ42.AJQ\xmln..tion_ab3ea86545595e2b_0002.0008_ab38540bc49376db

Then run regedit and open HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, then "xmlfile" and edit the "shell", "open" "command" so that the default string is:

"C:\Users\Chris\AppData\Local\Apps\2.0\60MPBT3D.ELV\H2QGHQ42.AJQ\xmln..tion_ab3ea86545595e2b_0002.0008_ab38540bc49376db\xmlnotepad.exe" %1

And now "xmlnotepad" shows up in the OpenWith list when you right click and XML file:

and this means you can use this menu to also make it the default, by selecting "Choose another app" and choose:

And check the box "Always use this app to open .xml files".

Thanks, Chris. I have the exe installed, not the app, so I set the command to this: "C:\Program Files (x86)\LovettSoftware\XmlNotepad\XmlNotepad.exe" "%1" Joe
