Unusual or weird error messages

Over the last couple days and weeks, I've seen several user reports with unusually short network error messages or ones where I can't explain how they came to be.

For example:

When I run gallery-dl for a domain with an invalid certificate, I get errors with reasonable message texts on both Windows and Linux:

[debug]  SSLError: CERTIFICATE_VERIFY_FAILED] certificate verify failed: certificate has expired (_ssl.c:1018) (1/5)

What could possibly be going on here? I suspect e8826ed has something to do with it, but why is this so vastly different for me and others?
