MDViewer v0.3.2

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 24 Oct 12:37

What's new

TL;DR as a diagram. The summary card has a List / Diagram switch. A diagram shows the whole document's shape at a glance as a Mermaid flowchart, mind map or timeline, and its nodes link to their sections: click one to jump there. Each style is kept with the file, so switching back is instant. Choose the default in Settings ▸ AI Summary ▸ Summary style.

  • If the model writes a diagram that can't be drawn, MDViewer asks it once to fix it, then offers the list instead.
  • Tested on long design documents from the Go, Kubernetes and React projects.

Huge documents on small models. Notes on the parts of a long document are now merged in rounds until they fit the model, and the list of sections is kept within budget too. No request exceeds the model's context, which matters most for local models (Ollama, LM Studio) that would otherwise silently drop part of the input.

Zoom. The summary now zooms with the document (⌘+ / ⌘−) and lines up with its text column.

Install: download the .dmg for your Mac below (macOS 13 or later), open it and drag MDViewer to Applications. It's signed and notarised, so it opens like any other app.

  • Apple silicon (M1 and later): MDViewer_0.3.2_aarch64.dmg
  • Intel: MDViewer_0.3.2_x64.dmg
  • Not sure? MDViewer_0.3.2_universal.dmg works on both, but is bigger. (Apple menu ▸ About This Mac shows which chip you have.)

To open Markdown files with MDViewer by double-click, choose MDViewer ▸ Settings… ▸ Make Default.

MDViewer v0.3.1

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 24 Oct 03:58

What's new

Signed and notarised. MDViewer is now signed with a Developer ID and notarised by Apple, so it opens with a normal double-click: no more trip to System Settings ▸ Privacy & Security to click Open Anyway. The Quick Look extension is signed the same way.

It also means macOS keeps remembering your choice when MDViewer reads your AI summary key from the keychain. You'll be asked once more after installing this version (choose Always Allow), and no longer after each update.

Everything else is the same as 0.3.0, including AI summaries (TL;DR) for long documents.

Install: download the .dmg for your Mac below (macOS 13 or later), open it and drag MDViewer to Applications.

  • Apple silicon (M1 and later): MDViewer_0.3.1_aarch64.dmg
  • Intel: MDViewer_0.3.1_x64.dmg
  • Not sure? MDViewer_0.3.1_universal.dmg works on both, but is bigger. (Apple menu ▸ About This Mac shows which chip you have.)

To open Markdown files with MDViewer by double-click, choose MDViewer ▸ Settings… ▸ Make Default.

MDViewer v0.3.0

@github-actions github-actions released this 23 Oct 13:23

What's new

TL;DR for long documents. Choose View ▸ Summarize (⇧⌘S) or click the new button at the top right, and a short summary streams in above the document, with links to the sections each point comes from. Made for the long plans and reports AI coding agents write.

TL;DR demo

  • Your provider, your model. Use your own API key with OpenRouter, OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, xAI Grok, Mistral, DeepSeek or Groq, or run a model on your Mac with Ollama or LM Studio, so documents never leave it. Custom works with any other OpenAI- or Anthropic-compatible service.
  • Your instructions. Edit what the summary should contain and how long it should be in Settings ▸ AI Summary.
  • Long documents that don't fit the model are read in parts, then summarized from notes on each part.
  • Kept with the file: the summary is there when you reopen it, and offers to update when the file changes.
  • Private by default: a document is only sent when you ask for a summary, and MDViewer asks before the first time for each provider. API keys are stored in your macOS keychain and never reach the page. macOS asks once to let MDViewer use the key: choose Always Allow (it asks again after an update, as MDViewer isn't signed by Apple).

Also:

  • Smaller downloads: 5.6 MB for Apple silicon (was 6.9), 5.7 MB for Intel (was 7.0) and 8.9 MB universal (was 11.5), as the app and its Quick Look extension now share one copy of the diagram renderer.
  • Settings has General and AI Summary tabs, and resizes to fit each one.

Install: download the .dmg for your Mac below (macOS 13 or later), open it and drag MDViewer to Applications.

  • Apple silicon (M1 and later): MDViewer_0.3.0_aarch64.dmg
  • Intel: MDViewer_0.3.0_x64.dmg
  • Not sure? MDViewer_0.3.0_universal.dmg works on both, but is bigger. (Apple menu ▸ About This Mac shows which chip you have.)

This build isn't notarised: the first time you open it, macOS blocks it. Go to System Settings ▸ Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway.

To open Markdown files with MDViewer by double-click, choose MDViewer ▸ Settings… ▸ Make Default.

MDViewer v0.2.2

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 23 Oct 06:46

What's changed

  • Separate downloads for Apple silicon and Intel, about 7 MB each, half the size of the 0.2.1 download. The universal DMG is still there if you're not sure which Mac you have.
  • Smaller app overall: the universal download went from 14.3 to 11.5 MB.
  • Task lists: ticked checkboxes are now clearly visible (a blue box with a white tick), in the app and in Quick Look.

Install: download the .dmg for your Mac below (macOS 13 or later), open it and drag MDViewer to Applications.

  • Apple silicon (M1 and later): MDViewer_0.2.2_aarch64.dmg
  • Intel: MDViewer_0.2.2_x64.dmg
  • Not sure? MDViewer_0.2.2_universal.dmg works on both, but is bigger. (Apple menu ▸ About This Mac shows which chip you have.)

This build isn't notarised: the first time you open it, macOS blocks it. Go to System Settings ▸ Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway.

@github-actions github-actions released this 22 Oct 09:19

What's changed

  • Title bar: the window buttons no longer jump while you resize a window. The title bar is now a native macOS toolbar, so macOS places the buttons itself.
  • Sidebar button sits where Mac apps usually put it: at the right edge of the sidebar when it's open, next to the window buttons when it's closed (as in Mail and Notes).
  • Start window: "Clear" lines up with the file list in Recent.

Install: download the .dmg below (one file for Apple silicon and Intel, macOS 13 or later), open it and drag MDViewer to Applications.

This build isn't notarised: the first time you open it, macOS blocks it. Go to System Settings ▸ Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway.

MDViewer v0.2.0

@github-actions github-actions released this 21 Oct 10:42

What's new

  • Quick Look: select a Markdown file in Finder and press space to preview it with MDViewer's rendering, including code highlighting, math and Mermaid diagrams.
  • Export as PDF and Export as HTML (File menu). HTML exports are a single file with everything embedded, so they open anywhere.
  • Copy as Rich Text (Edit menu, ⌥⇧⌘C) pastes formatted text into Mail, Docs or Slack, with math as TeX.
  • Link previews: hovering a link shows where it goes in the bottom-left corner, like Safari.
  • Printing keeps code block backgrounds and no longer shows a stray line along the left edge.
