Modrinth App does not open (rpm package)

Describe the bug

It instantly closes when I try to open it. In the terminal I became this error:

ERROR: WebKit encountered an internal error. Steps to reproduce

1. Download RPM package from modrinth.com
2. install the package via sudo dnf install "Modrinth App-0.10.7-1.x86_64.rpm"
3. Tried to open the App

Expected behavior

The App opens and stays open.

I’m also seeing this bug on Arch Linux (NVIDIA, GNOME on Wayland). The app crashes with the same “WebKit encountered an internal error” message.

As a temporary workaround I’ve been launching it with:

 WEBKIT_DISABLE_DMABUF_RENDERER=1 WEBKIT_DISABLE_COMPOSITING_MODE=1 modrinth-app

But the App is extremely slow for me, as if its running on 10 fps.

With that Command it launches but with 2 fps. Before I tried the RPM package I tried the AppImage, but that one has also only like 2 fps. So please can someone fix that fps/starting problem

The problem is (i believe), Modrinth uses Tauri and Tauri uses its own cross-platform WebView rendering library called Wry. Wry only supports WebKit2GTK on Linux.

Because of that the Linux build is tied to whatever capabilities WebKit2GTK exposes. On NVIDIA systems in particular, WebKit2GTK’s DMA-BUF/GBM acceleration is still unstable, which is why the app either crashes with the default renderer or falls back to CPU compositing and feels like ~5 fps when launched with WEBKIT_DISABLE_DMABUF_RENDERER=1 GDK_BACKEND=x11 at startup.

The Tauri/Wry developers themselves are aware of this limitation and have been experimenting with alternatives like Servo to replace WebKit2GTK, but Servo is still at a very early stage and not production-ready. Until Wry can switch to a different backend (or WebKit2GTK improves its NVIDIA support), there’s no easy way for the app to get smooth GPU rendering on Linux/NVIDIA.

It starts flawless, but at one point the app completetly freezes, idk why cause no error is in the terminal
