OrbitFetch 🌌

A graceful, cross-platform content synchronizer for the modern digital nomad.
Inspired by the elegance of media tooling, reimagined for the knowledge worker.

Overview 🧭

In an era where information flows across dozens of fragmented platforms, OrbitFetch emerges as your single, elegant gateway to capturing and organizing digital content — without ever touching a browser tab. Think of it as a personal content gravity well: you drop a link, and OrbitFetch pulls the full context into your local universe, preserving structure, metadata, and meaning.

Built for writers, researchers, archivists, and anyone who has ever felt the sting of a lost article, a dead tweet, or a removed video. OrbitFetch is not just a downloader; it is a time capsule for the open web.

The Philosophy 🪐

We believe in digital sovereignty — the idea that the content you find valuable should live on your machine, in your control, under your preferred format. OrbitFetch treats every piece of online content as a first-class artifact: text, image, audio, video, or structured data. No lock-in. No wrappers. Just clean, organized, accessible files.

Design Principles

  • Elegance over complexity: One command, one output, zero confusion.
  • Resilience: Handles network interruptions, rate limits, and malformed URLs with grace.
  • Privacy-first: No telemetry, no analytics, no third-party calls. Your activity stays local.
  • Cross-platform symmetry: Same experience on Linux, macOS, and Windows — no surprises.

Core Features 🎯

🌐 Universal Content Extraction

OrbitFetch understands the anatomy of modern web pages. It intelligently identifies the primary content — be it a YouTube video, a Substack article, a Twitter thread, or a PDF embedded behind a paywall — and extracts it with fidelity that rivals manual saving.

📂 Intelligent File Organization

No more downloads/video_1234.mp4. OrbitFetch creates a semantic folder tree based on content type, source domain, and user-defined tags.
Example structure:

./OrbitFetch/
├── articles/
│ └── 2026-03-15_why-birds-sing.md
├── video/
│ └── 2026-03-14_tutorial-python-async.mp4
└── audio/
    └── 2026-03-13_podcast-ep42.ogg

🔗 Multi-Source Batch Mode

Drop a .txt file with 50 URLs, or pipe them from a bookmark export. OrbitFetch processes them sequentially, respecting rate limits and avoiding bans — no IP blacklists, no captchas.

🧩 Metadata Preservation

Every artifact is accompanied by a .meta.json sidecar file containing:

  • Original URL and timestamp
  • Page title and description
  • Author/source attribution
  • Content hash for verification

🌍 Multilingual Interface

The interface (and inline help) adapts to your $LANG environment. Currently supports English, Spanish, French, German, Japanese, and Portuguese — with more on the way.

💬 Community-Driven Format Registry

Because the web evolves fast, OrbitFetch uses a pluggable format registry maintained by the community. When a new platform emerges (e.g., a new video host or social network), a simple configuration file extends support — no core update needed.

Getting Started 🚀

No complex setup. No dependencies to manually chase. Just a single binary that works.

  1. Download the appropriate package for your OS from the releases page.
  2. Place the binary in your $PATH (e.g., /usr/local/bin or C:\Windows\System32).
  3. Run orbitfetch --help to see available commands.
  4. Start with a single URL: orbitfetch https://example.com/article

That’s it. The first run creates a default configuration in ~/.config/orbitfetch/ if one doesn’t exist — but you don’t need to touch it unless you want to customize output locations or proxy settings.

Configuration 🛠️

OrbitFetch respects a simple YAML configuration file:

output_dir: ~/OrbitFetch
language: auto
max_concurrent: 3
rate_limit_ms: 1000
proxy: none
preserve_metadata: true
format_override:
  youtube: mp4
  twitter: json+media

All options are documented in the --config-example flag output.

Security & Privacy 🔒

  • Zero telemetry: OrbitFetch doesn’t call home. No analytics, no crash reporting, no usage statistics.
  • Encrypted metadata: If you enable it, metadata files are AES-256-GCM encrypted with a key you provide.
  • No external API keys: Unlike scrapers that require paid API keys, OrbitFetch works with public endpoints only.
  • Auditable: The entire source is open. Build it yourself if you prefer.

Community & Support 🌱

  • Documentation: Full docs at orbitfetch.io/docs (offline copy included in the binary).
  • Issue tracker: GitHub Issues for bugs, feature requests, and format registry contributions.
  • Discussion forum: Join the forum at community.orbitfetch.io for tips, workflows, and show-and-tell.
  • 24/7 maintenance: While we don’t offer personal support, the community and maintainers actively monitor issues and respond within 24 hours on weekdays.
