I have Universal Players in Player Providers but it is not showing up under Add Group Player

Add group player creates sync groups so only players that support perfect sync will appear there https://www.music-assistant.io/player-support/ |

Yeah there are two unrelated things now. Universal groups which allow any players to be grouped but not in sync. This requires the universal group provider to be added. Universal players are a construct which allows players to be created for devices which don’t have a native protocol directly associated with the device. For example, Picoreplayer is software which supports AirPlay and squeezelite vs a Sonos device which is primarily or exclusively Sonos. Back to your original question, if you don’t see “Universal Group Player” in that dialog then see if have the universal group provider added. |

Got ya, I added the player provuder for it and now it is in Add Group Players. Perhaps I lost it when I restored to a earlier backup. I do have a WiiM sound speaker configured in Music Assistant to use DLNA. When I use my DLNA configured Yamaha receiver and try to add the WiiM to the Yamaha it connects for a second then and rhe artwork shows on the speakers LCD screen but then the screen goes black with a small chromecast logo. No audio out of the WiiM but the volume indicator on the LCD screen works. I also tried a Group Sync Player with the same result. The WiiM does work alone via DLNA. |

DLNA is traditionally flaky and universal groups are on a best effort basis. COmbine those two and it is not surprising it doesn't work. If you have other options then try those. FOr a start what other protocols does the receiver support? |

While the receiver does not support CHromecast I I was able to plug my Nvidia Shield into the receivers AV1 via HDMI and make a speaker group in the Google Home App and use that as a player. It works in sync but I feel the sound quality takes a hit vs DLNA out of the Yamaha Receiver. The WiiM Speaker holds the quality over Chromecast vs DLNA better than the Yamaha. I also tried the same with a Sync Group Player after setting the preferred player on the WiiM speaker to Chromecast. That yielded no sound out of both the shield tied into the Yamaha and the WiiM speaker but the volume control visually worked for both. Again the WIIM displayed the artwork for a second then the screen went black with a Chromecast logo. Interestingly the Yamaha Receiver shows up under SGP along with a couple of Google Speakers so I grouped them and they play in sync with AirPlay going to the receiver and what I would imagine is Chromecast going to the Google Speakers. The WiiM will only play with other players when it is grouped with other Chromecast speakers in the Google Home App. The following are the supported protocols for the Yamaha Receiver. DLNA 1.5 AirPlay 1 Wi-Fi & Ethernet: Features built-in Wi-Fi with Wireless Direct, allowing a mobile device to connect directly to the receiver without a home router. Bluetooth: Supported for wireless music playback from smartphones and tablets. MHL (Mobile High-Definition Link): Allows for the playback of HD video and audio from compatible mobile devices via the front-panel HDMI port. HTC Connect: Specifically for streaming music from HTC Connect-compatible smartphones. |

So looks like no MusicCast so you should use AirPlay with the receiver. I am seeing more reports about WiiM devices unfortunately but we are looking at those as they are popular. If it supports AirPlay then you should be set. If not try Chromecast again as the new sendspin bridges should enable you to sync the receiver to the WiiM that way |

The WiiM ecosystem is great when used thru the WiiM app and there speakers sound great for their size and yes they are popular. Unfortunately the speakers don't support Airplay. Perhaps a licensing issues. My yamaha does not support musiccast but I could buy the yamaha musiccast adapter to give it support if it would help. I have not really looked into its capabilities other than it casting to Yamaha wireless speakers. I also edited my prior comment which you may have read before I put the edits thru. Stick with AirPlay for the receiver. That should work fine File an issue with what is wrong with the WiiM and Chromecast as it should work. There are a few issues currently that mention WiiM that you can check https://github.com/music-assistant/support/issues?q=is%3Aissue%20state%3Aopen%20wiim |

When experimenting with sendspin do you actually set the players you are attempting to group to default to sendspin? The WiiM Speaker officially supports Chromecast so I am not sure why it's being flaky in groups of other Chromecast players. Anyway WIiM makes the WiiM pro and mini that supports AirPlay 2 and it is my understanding that it can push Airplay to the WiiM speakers so that may be a work around. Will file the WiIIm issue with support. Thanks |

No let MA take care of which output protocol to use unless you have a very good reason for changing it. In terms of Chromecast groups. Have you tried both setting up a group in the Google Home app as well as just joining them on the fly through the MA UI? |

Yes both, Google Home App created groups seem to work. On the fly yeilds the aforementioned condition with other Chromecast speakers in the mix. Both when the WiiM is the lead and when another Chromecast Speaker is the lead. I will note that the other Chromecast speakers play, it's only the WIiM that falls to launch when it is not the lead or stops playing when it is the lead and other Chromecast speakers are added on the fly. |

OK then please note that sendspin bridges to cast devices (what you have with the Wiim when grouping it on the fly) is known to not work with all devices. https://www.music-assistant.io/faq/groups/ So the working combinations you have identified will be your options. |

Yes fine with the Google Home created groups. They only downside when it comes to Chromecast is not having the ability to add on the fly right now. I do find it interesting that I am able to connect to my Google Chromecast speakers on the fly when my Yamaha receiver is the lead with AirPlay. Now if I could get the WiiM to join in it would be great. Thanks for your help. |
