diffopt inline:word and :diffget within line

The new(ish) diffopt feature inline:word is great! But the existing commands diffput and diffget for modifying diffed text always seem to operate on a minimum of a single line. So, it's not possible to get/put a single highlighted change in a line with multiple changes. This is true even when highlighting only a single word with a line as the range argument to diffget — it still gets the whole line.

1. Am I missing something obvious?
2. If not, and I want to write a custom "get/put the current word-level diff" mapping, how can I get the bounds of the current diff?

The excellent diffchar plugin has commands for this. But, it only works using its own diff algorithm; it now seems nice to build this on top of the built-in diff.

That's correct. I feel like anything more granular is entering the realm of absurdity, at that point you might as well just copy/paste or manually type in what you want. The number of times you need such granularity when editing a diff is presumably very rare.

The situation where I use it frequently is editing soft-wrapped plain text, like markdown or latex. You might have a handful of changes in a paragraph; you get one, manually edit the next one as a kind of merge, then get a third unchanged, all on the same line of a file.

Makes sense. Consider a feature request at https://github.com/vim/vim since Vim mostly owns diff-mode.

That makes sense; thanks. If I want to build something in the meantime, do you have any thought on question 2? That is, how to get the bounds of the current intra-line diff? I don't find anything in the docs where that info is exposed.
