The new(ish)
The excellent diffchar plugin has commands for this. But, it only works using its own diff algorithm; it now seems nice to build this on top of the built-in diff. |

That's correct. I feel like anything more granular is entering the realm of absurdity, at that point you might as well just copy/paste or manually type in what you want. The number of times you need such granularity when editing a diff is presumably very rare. |
