As part of a discovery into building a native NHS App, the team have been exploring using start pages at the beginning of core transactional journeys (such as booking an appointment and requesting a prescription).

Examples from recent prototypes:

Start pages typically give users:

• the name of the service
• a list of things users need to know, like how the service works or what will happen
• a "Start now" button
• other ways to access the service

Using start pages in a consistent way, when users are about to enter a transactional journey, may help them understand where they are and what is about to happen.

At the same time, we need to make sure the content on these screens is valuable for users, and giving them the information they need at the right time.

Research

The app team have introduced start pages into the current app when users start their journey into certain third-party integrations. These pages have followed the NHS Service Manual start page pattern and have worked well.

Recommendations

• Agree and test an NHS App start page pattern? Take through content crit and user testing.
• Look at how the pattern would vary for different types of integrations, including third-party ones.
