OpenRoll 0.2.1

Choose a tag to compare

@noah-thing noah-thing released this 04 Nov 21:17

OpenRoll 0.2.1: no more keychain popup on Mac.

Quick setup

macOS and Linux

curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/noah-thing/openroll/main/install.sh | sh

Windows (PowerShell)

irm https://raw.githubusercontent.com/noah-thing/openroll/main/install.ps1 | iex

Already installed? This update arrives on its own.

Fixed

  • macOS no longer asks for your login password with the "OpenRoll Safe Storage" keychain popup. You can stop answering it: OpenRoll doesn't use the keychain anymore.
  • Quitting after an export no longer gets held up behind that popup.

First launch

If your computer shows a popup the first time you open OpenRoll, that's only because the app isn't code signed yet. The setup command above skips it. All of the code is public, and every file below is listed with its checksum in SHA256SUMS.txt.

OpenRoll 0.2.0

@github-actions github-actions released this 04 Nov 10:31

OpenRoll 0.2.0: fonts, templates, speed ramps, and a faster, smaller app.

Quick setup

macOS and Linux

curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/noah-thing/openroll/main/install.sh | sh

Windows (PowerShell)

irm https://raw.githubusercontent.com/noah-thing/openroll/main/install.ps1 | iex

New

  • Fonts: 14 free fonts for titles and captions, from clean sans to bold display, serif, handwritten and mono. Each one previews in its own face.
  • Templates: 19 starters (hook titles, lower thirds, chapter and end cards, quote cards, a countdown, punch zoom cuts, caption styles). Save your own, share them as files, and browse community templates from GitHub.
  • Speed ramps: Montage, Hero, Bullet, Jump cut, Flash in and Flash out, plus a curve you can draw yourself. Keyframes get smooth custom easing too.
  • Captions offer: bring in a clip with talking and OpenRoll asks if you want captions. One click, or turn it off in Settings.

Faster

  • Much less work while paused: about 5% CPU on a busy timeline instead of 30%.
  • Busy timelines export faster, and editing during playback no longer restarts the sound.
  • Captions are made about twice as fast, and background removal and upscaling are quicker.
  • The download is about a quarter smaller.

Fixed

  • Hebrew and Arabic titles keep their word order, and long words or text without spaces wrap instead of running off the frame.
  • Captions can be moved and resized in the viewer.
  • Read aloud (text to speech) works in the installed app.
  • Projects with damaged or unusual data open repaired instead of failing later, and an image clip on an audio track no longer freezes the app.
  • Importing ProRes, MKV and similar files works on Windows with the smaller download, and camera MOV files with a timecode track import everywhere.
  • Many smaller fixes to caption splitting, voiceover, safety checks and the AI connection.

@github-actions github-actions released this 01 Nov 23:27

The first release of OpenRoll, a free video editor for Mac, Windows and Linux.

Quick setup

macOS and Linux

curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/noah-thing/openroll/main/install.sh | sh

Windows (PowerShell)

irm https://raw.githubusercontent.com/noah-thing/openroll/main/install.ps1 | iex

Or download the file for your system below.

What is in it

  • A timeline that keeps up: smooth playback at 60 fps on 4K and phone footage, with fast scrubbing on long files.
  • Captions made on your computer, with word highlights, plus smart cuts that remove silences and filler words.
  • Sound tools: noise removal, voice enhance, loudness to the social standard, music that dips under speech, beat detection, voiceover and text to speech.
  • 24 filters, 22 effects, LUTs, curves, masks, green screen, keyframes and transitions.
  • Background removal, stabilising, auto reframe for vertical video, smooth slow motion and upscaling, all running on your computer.
  • Long video to shorts, cut to the beat, picture in picture, stickers and safe zones for each platform.
  • Export to MP4, HEVC, WebM, ProRes, GIF and audio, in the background while you keep editing.
  • AI tools like Claude Code can edit alongside you: see Settings, Let AI tools edit with you.

First launch

If your computer shows a popup the first time you open OpenRoll, that's only because the app isn't code signed yet. The setup command above skips it. All of the code is public, and every file below is listed with its checksum in SHA256SUMS.txt. To open it past the popup:

  • Mac: open OpenRoll once and close the popup, then go to System Settings, Privacy and Security, and click Open Anyway next to OpenRoll.
  • Windows: if SmartScreen appears, click More info, then Run anyway.
  • Linux: make the AppImage executable (chmod +x) and run it, or install the .deb.

Updates install quietly from now on. You can turn that off in Settings.
