Description
This ticket tracks OONI data analysis requirements in support of a study on the blocking of Women on Web domains around the world (see: ooni/ooni.org#1833). This builds upon our previous studies which documented the blocking of Women on Web in Spain and several other countries. The goal is to publish a new research report on the global blocking of WoW in the fall of 2025.
Data analysis requirements
The deadline for this data analysis is 30th September 2025.
Overall, this analysis involves:
- Country code: IR, KR, TR, CN, ES
- Date range of analysis: 30th September 2024 - 30th September 2025 (1 year)
- Analyzed OONI measurements: Web Connectivity -> Limited to 14 Women on Web domains shared below
Note: I have listed the countries where WoW domains seem to be blocked based on a quick look at the MAT. If you find the domains blocked in additional countries, please include them. It may be worth referring to the countries based on which we updated test lists: https://github.com/citizenlab/test-lists/pull/1949/files
The main questions that we want to answer with OONI data analysis are:
- In which countries are Women on Web domains blocked?
- On which networks (in each of those countries) do we observe the strongest signals of blocking?
- How are Women on Web domains blocked on each of those networks? Which censorship techniques do ISPs adopt?
This study involves analyzing the following 14 Women on Web domains:
abortion-korea.org
womenonweb.kr
abortion.kr
women-on-web.kr
aborcja-polska.org
abortion.jp
abortuszr.org
aborsionline.org
comoabortar.org
haplarlakurtaj.org
ijhad.org
pengguguran.org
www.womenonweb.org
safeabortionpills.org
safeabortionpills.com
safeabortionpill.org
abortion-pills.org
The main countries where WoW domains appear to be censored (based on OONI data) include:
- South Korea
- Turkey
- China
- Iran
- Spain
By looking at aggregate views of OONI data via the Measurement Aggregation Toolkit (MAT), it seems that these domains are primarily blocked in South Korea, Turkey, and China: https://explorer.ooni.org/chart/mat?test_name=web_connectivity&axis_x=measurement_start_day&since=2025-07-14&until=2025-08-14&time_grain=day&domain=abortion-korea.org%2Cwomenonweb.kr%2Cabortion.kr%2Cwomen-on-web.kr%2Caborcja-polska.org%2Cabortion.jp%2Cabortuszr.org%2Caborsionline.org%2Ccomoabortar.org%2Chaplarlakurtaj.org%2Cijhad.org%2Cpengguguran.org%2Cwomenonweb.org%2Csafeabortionpills.org&axis_y=probe_cc
Additionally, we know that www.womenonweb.org is blocked on some networks in Spain: https://explorer.ooni.org/chart/mat?probe_cc=ES&test_name=web_connectivity&domain=www.womenonweb.org&since=2025-07-15&until=2025-08-15&axis_x=measurement_start_day&time_grain=day
Women on Web is also blocked in Iran: https://explorer.ooni.org/chart/mat?probe_cc=IR&test_name=web_connectivity&domain=www.womenonweb.org&since=2025-07-15&until=2025-08-15&axis_x=measurement_start_day&time_grain=day
