make `install -e` work (again?)

We are using use_scm_version=True in setup.py, but you're not declaring [tool.setuptools_scm] in our pyproject.toml.

what is the command you are executing, and the full log?

you don't need to open issues for things like this, I'm fine w/ just a PR.

And the log? I'm not sure -e will work w/ the compiled extension, our setup.py is really old, and there are better tools out there now. However, they get complicated, iirc, if you want to have a c++ library and the python bindings in the same tree.

ok... how do you envision development? I build with cmake and then run in the folder the ctest that I just created to test the library?

yeah, that's generally what I do; sometimes I make a venv, install the package, and then symlink a where ever my build is to the installed .so file, so I can just ninja and it replaces the .so.
