User installed plugins in $HOME

Is there a way to install plugins for audacious inside of the $HOME directory? I've seen this and I'm not sure if it's the goal of the developers to not have a way for users to install plugins in their $HOME directory. Perhaps there's an environment variable that handles this of which I'm not aware?

I do not think this is possible anymore. The support to allow installing plugins in $HOME has been removed intentionally with commit 216b2e3#r8610384.

Maybe @jlindgren90 can still recall why. Probably due to security concerns and for less code complexity.

What is the use case? Are you attempting to install new plugins on someone else's machine where you don't have access to root?

The feature was disabled 13 years ago and I cannot remember the last time anyone else even asked about it.

What I'm looking for is the ability to have my desired plugins outside of the audacious installation, I'm using an unofficial appimage of audacious and as of now I'd have to extract the appimage and repack it in order to install the plugin I want. Outside of this usecase there are also immutable distros and at the moment I'm not aware of any way to install a plugin for audacious on those kinds of distros, as all the major system directories are read only on immutable distros.
