To resolve this, try using the following markdown format for your link in the README: [JMRI]**(https://link-to-jmri) (delete the 2 * , I made them just to stop github from detecting it as link and hiding the text after [JMRI]) |

My README has a link in it and it does not render as proper markdown.
I had to add the actual html <a> tag to get it to show as expected:
my repository
In this comment the link renders correctly with markdown syntax. But if you check the linked README, you'll see what i mean for the link to "jmri" at the end of the first paragraph.
(the last link is the version with <a>)
