Update your permissions for fine-grained Personal Access Tokens (PATs)!

Access to the GitHub Models toolset now officially requires the models:read permission for fine-grained Personal Access Tokens (PATs) and GitHub Apps.

If your tokens or apps don’t include this permission, requests to the playground will now return an Unauthorized response! This change follows a previous warning in March.

Please make sure your fine-grained PATs and GitHub Apps are updated to include models:read to avoid disruption, we want you to keep having access to our product ❤️. Coarse-grained tokens are unaffected and will continue to work without changes.

My PAT already had this permission and I'm getting 401s. I even tried to regenerate the token twice. It just suddenly started happening about 10 minutes ago.

This is still not working. I've deleted the existing token completely now and regenerated it - still getting 401s.

I see you are using an organization based token. However for that particular endpoint, the token needs to be user based. So you should see the models:read permission under Account permissions instead of Organization.

We also just officially released docs on our API. So if you want to continue using organization based tokens, there is a different endpoint for you to hit there. You can read more about it at https://github.blog/changelog/2025-05-15-github-models-api-now-available/

Ah that would explain it. This has been working for months, so I guess I must have had it configured incorrectly and the new changes have tightened the token usage. Thanks very much, hope this helps other people too :).

I couldn't see a models:read permission in the fine-grained tokens, but I made a classic token that works fine. Thanks for that detail, I was going in circles.
