I'm a beginner developer and I'm not really working on projects that would attract sponsors just yet.

Still, I'm very curious about the process and I'd love to hear your story: How did you get your very first sponsor? Was it a complete surprise, or did you actively campaign for it?

I’ve seen a few common ways people get their first GitHub Sponsor:

• Surprise thank-you: Someone sponsored after I fixed a bug or answered their issue quickly.
• Visibility spike: A release hit HN/Reddit/X, and a grateful user became the first sponsor.
• Content → sponsor: A blog post/video/tutorial linked to Sponsors; a reader sponsored.
• Small but useful tool: A dev using a tiny lib at work sponsored personally.
• Friend/colleague: First sponsor was someone who believed in the project/consistency.
• Company matching: Employer or user’s company matched and kicked off the first sponsor.

What helps:

• Enable Sponsors (funding.yml), add the button/badge to README and repo description.
• Say why sponsorship matters (maintenance, docs, roadmap) and what supporters get.
• Offer low tiers ($1–$5) and a simple thank-you (name in README or release notes).
• Be visible: post release notes, share updates, join Discussions, write short posts.
• Make it easy to find: link Sponsors in README, docs, issues, package page.
• Thank sponsors publicly (with permission).

It can take time—keep shipping, be helpful, and make the ask clear. Even one sponsor counts!
