Locked out due to 2FA authenticator loss #186402

I’ve been through this situation before, and unfortunately there isn’t a workaround or shortcut once you lose access to both the authenticator app and recovery codes. Submitting a ticket under “Can’t pass 2FA” is the correct and only supported path. GitHub Support will manually verify account ownership using things like email access, past login activity, IP/device history, and repository or organization activity. Response times vary, but most people hear back within a few business days, though it can take longer if the account has organization access or higher security review requirements. Community discussions or moderators can’t unlock the account, so waiting on Support is necessary. Once access is restored, GitHub will usually require you to re-enable 2FA immediately. It’s strongly recommended to add multiple 2FA methods and securely store recovery codes to avoid this in the future. In short: you’ve done the right thing — now it’s just a matter of waiting for Support to complete verification. |

Hi everyone,
I’m currently locked out of my GitHub account because I no longer have access to the authenticator app that was generating my two-factor authentication codes. I’m also unable to locate my recovery codes.
I’ve already submitted a support ticket under the “Can’t pass 2FA” category and provided all requested details (username, email, last login info, location, etc.). At the moment, I’m waiting for GitHub Support to review the request.
I’m posting here to ask if anyone has experienced a similar situation and can share what the recovery timeline or process was like. I’m not looking to bypass security — just hoping to understand what to expect while I wait.
Thanks in advance for any insights.
