Why do multiple commits sometimes appear as a single contribution in GitHub graph?

I noticed a behavior in GitHub contribution graph that I would like to understand better.

On a public repository, I made 4 separate commits on the main branch using my verified GitHub email. However, the contribution graph shows only 1 contribution for that day.

A friend of mine experienced the same behavior in a different repository, so it does not seem to be isolated.

What I verified:

• Commits exist in repository history
• Branch is main (default branch)
• Email matches GitHub account
• Repository is public
• Commits are visible in git log

My question:

Under what conditions does GitHub group multiple commits into a single contribution in the graph?

Is this related to:

• commit aggregation logic?
• UI grouping per day?
• or specific contribution rules?

Any clarification would help understand GitHub contribution tracking better.
