Main reasons:
some servers randomly stop working
subtitle support can be inconsistent
not much customization
difficult to build advanced features around it
So far I've tested:

VidCore
The biggest surprise was VidCore because it has TMDB-based URLs, subtitle parameters, autoplay controls, custom themes and support for both movies and TV shows.
