Summary

Since approximately June, 2026, Copilot Chat has been completely broken on my machine in all modes (Ask, Plan, and Agent). Every request fails with the error below. The issue persists even after extensive troubleshooting.

Analysis

The error path /v1/messages is the Anthropic API endpoint. It appears that Copilot Chat is attempting to call the Claude API but with a missing or malformed base URL, resulting in an invalid URL being constructed.

Troubleshooting Already Performed

• ✅ Cleared Copilot Chat global storage (~/Library/Application Support/Code/User/globalStorage/github.copilot-chat/)
• ✅ Checked environment variables — no suspicious ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL, OPENAI_BASE_URL, or proxy variables found
• ✅ Reviewed settings.json — no custom model, Claude, or proxy configurations
• ✅ Removed potentially conflicting AI extension (AbacusAI)
• ✅ No .vscode/settings.json in the active workspace
• ✅ VS Code is on the latest version (1.125.1)
• ❌ Problem persists after all of the above

Expected Behavior

Copilot Chat should successfully send requests and receive responses in all modes (Ask, Plan, and Agent) without URL construction errors.

Actual Behavior

Every request in all Copilot Chat modes (Ask, Plan, and Agent) fails immediately with Failed to parse URL from /v1/messages: Invalid URL.

Additional Notes

• The issue appears to have started around the same time as a Copilot Chat extension auto-update (~June 13, 2026)
• The error affects all chat modes: Ask, Plan, and Agent
• No firewall or network restrictions are in place
