How to install espeak-ng on Ubuntu -- Instructions

Here are the instructions to install espeak-ng directly from the repo.

If you are not getting 1.52 version via apt-get channel, here are the instructions for a clean install directly from the repo. The following instructions assume that you have sudo access.

git clone git@github.com:espeak-ng/espeak-ng.git
cd espeak-ng/
sudo apt-get install automake
sudo apt-get install libtool
./autogen.sh
./configure
make
sudo make install
sudo ldconfig

The last line sudo ldfconfig is important to setup the library paths, else you get the error

espeak-ng: symbol lookup error: espeak-ng: undefined symbol: espeak_ng_SetRandSeed

Check the installation via

espeak-ng --version

It should print

eSpeak NG text-to-speech: 1.52.0  Data at: /usr/local/share/espeak-ng-data
