crash after loading somewhat large multifile project

tried multiple, last one I tried was
MicroPython v1.29.0-preview.199.ga595bbba67 on 2026-05-09; Seeed XIAO RP2350 with RP2350

Reproduction

1. clone repo at
   https://gitlab.sxpert.org/embedded/micropython/home-automation/nanoserver.git
   branch 'main'
2. in vscode / micropico, attempt to upload project
3. see the device mess itself up and stop responding as it appears to walk all over itself as the upload is possibly too large

Expected behaviour

some sort of error that there is no more space available

Observed behaviour

complete crash of the device
removing currently unused parts of the project allows for successful runs (see the 'lox-sniff' branch)

Hello, thanks for raising this , but I do not think it belongs in this repo, nor that it is a bug.

for reference: mpremote does give a clean message :

PS C:\dev\triage\nanoserver> mpremote cp -rv . :
cp . :
 ... copying   3% [--------------------]mpremote: : No space left on device.

If you wish for a cleaner error from MicroPico I suggest you ask at the that repo.

However there are a few things that you could do yourself:

• test with copying using mpremote : mpremote cp -rv . :
  does this perhaps copy more than you expect ?

• I suggest use a src folder with all, and copy just that folder recursively to the device.
  AFAIK MicroPico supports this by moving the project marker to that folder

kudos for using typing :-)
I know typing will automagically add the src folder ,
you may need to add the src/lib folder manually if MicroPico does not do that for you.

I'll try those.
my experience is the micropico uploader stalling and then the board doing wierd stuff... so there's some disconnect between what mpremote does and what micropico does...
so at micropico the complaint goes, I guess
