Passwords
A small password manager. Each entry is one file, encrypted with GnuPG. You have one master password; GnuPG asks for it in its own window and remembers it for a while. AIcove never sees it. Nobody can reset it: without it the entries can't be read.
Using it
- Click an entry to open it. Copy next to the password copies it, and so does a double-click on the entry. The clipboard is emptied again after 45 seconds.
-
New…: type, name, user, password, address, notes, then Save. A
/in the name makes a group, for exampleexample.com/me@example.com. - Generate makes a random password of 20 characters.
- Lock makes GnuPG forget the master password now.
- Every change is kept in the store's history, so an overwritten or deleted entry can be recovered.
Types
Every entry has a type, the folder it is kept in: web, mail, social, shopping, finance, gov, games, media, app, wifi, pc, server, db, vpn, crypto or other. The list is grouped by type; click a type's heading to fold it away. The menu above the list shows one type only. The type menu in front of the name moves an entry to another type when you save. Older entries that aren't in a type folder are listed under "(no type)".
Bringing in a browser's passwords
- Export them from the browser. Chromium and Chrome: Settings → Passwords → Export; Firefox: Passwords → ⋯ → Export. Bitwarden and most other password managers can export the same way.
- More → Import CSV and pick the file.
- The logins are listed without their passwords, each with a type from its site. Untick what you don't want, change types (select several rows and give them one type at once), rename if you like. A login that is already in the store comes unticked.
- Import the ticked ones. GnuPG may ask for the master password once.
- Say yes to shredding the file: it holds every password in plain text.
A second machine
- First machine: More → Set sync address (a git address you can push to), then Sync now.
- First machine: More → Export key. Carry that file over yourself.
- Second machine: Get my store from another machine…, then More → Import key. Delete the key file on both.
After that Sync now on either machine exchanges the changes. If the same entry was changed on both before syncing, nothing is merged until you pick a side in the More menu.
The server only ever holds encrypted entries. The key is not put there.
