Installation Instructions

Joshua H. Fogg edited this page Oct 30, 2015 · 1 revision

This page will show you how to install the latest version of Ozon OS. If you've installed a Linux distribution before, the instructions should be the same. But for those who havn't, read on!

What you'll need:

  • An ISO image burner; I recommend Rufus, as its easy to use and can be run from a USB.
  • A USB drive. A 2 gigabyte stick 'should' work, but I'm using a 8 gigabyte. You can find one at a local computer shop or buy one online. If you don't have a USB, a SD Card will work as well.
  • The latest Ozon OS release. You can download that here.

Note: Ozon OS, as of 10/16/2015, is for 64 bit computers! If you don't know what architecture your computer is, right-click the Windows icon and click "System."

Burning the image

Once you have all of the above, you can start by launching Rufus. It will ask you for Administrator access; click "Yes" when the UAC prompt appears. Click "Device" and make sure you have selected the correct USB/SD device. The partition scheme shouldn't matter, so leave that as-is. File System should be set to FAT or FAT32, as its understandable by a large majority of operating systems. Leave Cluster Size as-is also. The Volume Label can be anything you want; I'd call it "Ozon" so you know what it is. Leave the check boxes on "Format Options" alone, but click the hard-drive icon (It looks like a HDD with a CD/DVD on top), and navigate to the Ozon ISO file you downloaded. Now, you can click "Start." It might say something about Syslinux 6.03, and if that happens, click "Yes." Also, if it asks how it wants to burn, make sure "Write in ISO Image mode" is selected, so you can reuse the USB/SD afterwords. Make sure you say "Ok" when it says it will destroy all data on the device. Its not kidding either. Make sure you have nothing on the drive, or it will be lost forever.

Depending on your computers speed, this can take from 5 seconds to 5 minutes. Be patient though. When its done, you can eject the USB/SD and shutdown your computer.

Booting into the USB/SD

In order to install Ozon, you first need to boot into the USB/SD. Eject all other devices so your BIOS doesn't get confused or try to boot into the wrong device. On most computers, its one of the function keys on the top of the keyboard. Scroll to where you see USB/SD or the name of the device, and hit "Enter." It should turn black and say "Start Ozon OS Live" and "Troubleshoot." We want to boot, so just hit enter again. Wait a bit, and soon it will ask if you want to install Ozon OS or try it live. Thats your choice, but right now we're going to click "Install."

Installing Ozon OS

When you click Install, it will say "Welcome to Fedora 21." This says "Fedora" rather than Ozon because Ozon is built around Fedora 21. If you don't know what Fedora is, then you might want to look here. It will ask your language; select it and click "Continue." It will bring up four options, but we want "Installation Destination." Select the disk name at the top, and at the bottom select "I will configure partitioning." Click done, and it will bring you to a page titled "Manual Partitioning." Look around for a few filesystems with the "NTFS" filesystem label. This is your Windows install. DO NOT TOUCH IT! Rather, look for the largest one, click it, and look where it says "___ GB." This is the partition size, and we need to shrink it. In my case, its at about 900 gigabytes, so I replaced "900" with "450." Now scroll back to the top and click "Cick here to create them automatically." After its done, go to the top and click "Done." Also click "Accept Changes." After you click that though, your hard-drive will be modified, and you can't undo changes made to it. After that, click "Begin Installation" at the bottom.

Now it will have a progress bar on the bottom; ignore that. At the top is "Root Password" and "User Creation." Go to "Root Password" and type in a good one. This will be needed to install programs to the computer. Think of it as UAC for Linux, except also wanting a password. Click "Done" and then "User Creation." Type in your name (Can be anything, for me I put "Eric") and the Username (For me it would be "GizmoCodes"). Then type in another password. This will be what you use to login, and should be different from the Root password. Once you do that, click "Done." Then wait until it says its done, and click "Reboot." When it does, remove the USB/SD.

Logging into Ozon

Now after the BIOS screen, you may see a black box with a few selections highlighted. This is normal, and is known as the Grub Bootloader. Make sure you selected "Fedora" and wait 5 or so seconds or hit "Enter." Note: If you want to boot into Windows, look for "Windows Recovery Environment." This will boot into normal Windows, not the recovery version. Then you log into Ozon and start using it.

Ozon isn't working!

Well, that didn't work. Keep in mind that Ozon is still a BETA, and will crash sometimes. If a reboot doesn't fix, Report a Problem.
