Docs incorrect, frankenphp now installed in /usr/bin, not /usr/local/bin

What happened?

The README says:

curl https://frankenphp.dev/install.sh | sh
mv frankenphp /usr/local/bin/

But on a Debian/Ubuntu install, it's using packages now and frankenphp is already installed in /usr/bin after the install.sh

The static binary does not really have set paths for where configuration files should go. It's just a file, not a real installation.

I've added the correct paths for the deb/rpm packages and adjusted the path to install to /usr/local/bin by default.

Wait, isn't ddev based on Docker? I think the Docker images of FrankenPHP should be preferred then. I'm personally not sure, I don't use Docker to run php.

The DDEV recipe I'm testing installs frankenphp in the Debian Trixie-based ddev-webserver. So this is all about what happens installing FrankenPHP in Debian (and I assume Ubuntu)

This is a ready-to-use Docker image with FrankenPHP that support most extensions. Simpler than setting up an environment and then installing the deb packages in it.

I still don't really know what we're talking about here, sorry. I am naive and just trying to get our DDEV recipe working again.

https://frankenphp.dev/install.sh installs a debian package named frankenphp which installs these things:

None of these would work with mv frankenphp /usr/local/bin, because frankenphp is not in the current directory, and I think it would be odd to move it from /usr/bin to /usr/local/bin

I am suggesting you change the ddev recipe to use FROM dunglas/frankenphp, which is a Debian Trixie image with FrankenPHP set up, rather than setting up a base debian image and then installing frankenphp in it.

I've already removed the mv frankenphp /usr/local/bin instruction from the readme in the PR I linked.

We have two different ways with DDEV for FrankenPHP. One demonstrates it as an alternate webserver, https://docs.ddev.com/en/stable/users/quickstart/#generic-frankenphp

The other is as an add-on, which uses the docker image. https://github.com/stasadev/ddev-frankenphp

Sorry, I missed the fact that you had an open PR to fix up the instructions. I read right past that when you said you had fixed it.

Does that PR fix both the README.md and https://frankenphp.dev/docs/ as well?

I believe the first should be updated to use the Docker image then, too. The Docker images also support xdebug. The deb packages which you now install with install.sh technically also offer xdebug, though. Alongside integration with systemd and apt, which both make no sense in a Docker container.

Yeah, the "generic webserver" installation is not as good as the add-on, but it's a longstanding demonstration of using a completely different webserver in DDEV. The add-on is well-maintained and the preferred approach, and popularized in https://ddev.com/blog/using-frankenphp-with-ddev/

We'd always love to have your input on how those things can be improved, and any thoughts about updates to the blog.

I'm not very familiar with ddev apart from hearing good things about it, as I don't use Docker but work with good ol' systemd.

I think it would be great if FrankenPHP could become included by default. There's actually a little trick to get all the benefits of worker mode and debugging at the same time:

Only requests with the xdebug session set will be handled by fpm with xdebug enabled, while FrankenPHP can serve in worker mode without the xdebug extension. Zero webserver toggling/restarting, only activate xdebug helper and you can debug.

Also makes #995 unnecessary.

We do see a future where frankenphp becomes a third webserver_type in DDEV, along with nginx-fpm and apache-fpm.
