can not install pmd from source

Tried to install pmd from source to try to add a new custom java rule.
It requires git directory

Please specify a valid [dotGitDirectory] in your project

This is not an error message I've ever seen... Please add as much info as possible, including the commands you're trying to run and their full output text.
