Hi @ben, you wanted a PR for this issue (see your comment at #506 (comment)), but the user has not responded in 4 years.
The issue is still present in the book, so I'm fixing it myself.
I hope this is right, please check my work. 😄
The scope of the fix expanded beyond the one change that you wanted in #506, because multiple parts of the book reference /etc/gitconfig.
