Docs failure:

subprocess.CalledProcessError: Command 'python -c 'import versioneer; print(versioneer.get_version())'' returned non-zero exit status 1.

Indeed docs/conf.py still contains this. Apparently the dead config was propping up having missed switching the version access for the docs. Easy fix, glad to have tests.
