Suspected memory leak in decode_image when reading webp files #8710

🐛 Describe the bug

When I ran large training using the new decode_image I noticed increased memory usage on directories with webp files until the process crashed.

Later I try the following:

from torchvision.io import decode_image

for _ in range(1_000_000):
    decode_image("/Datasets/imagenet-w21-sample/00/n00005787_1318.webp")

And I can see the memory keeps increasing.

I don't see this behavior in jpeg or png files.


As the decode_image is way faster than the older pil_loader, my current workaround is:

from torchvision.datasets.folder import pil_loader
from torchvision.io import ImageReadMode
from torchvision.io import decode_image
from torchvision.transforms.functional import pil_to_tensor

def _tv_loader(path: str) -> torch.Tensor:
    if path.endswith(".webp") is True:  # Memory leak in TV webp
        return pil_to_tensor(pil_loader(path))

    return decode_image(path, mode=ImageReadMode.RGB)
