gdb showed a seemingly healthy stack trace (no infinite recursion), which grew too big (50MB when aborting, with the last frame, aws_sdk_s3::config::endpoint::internals::resolve_endpoint, consuming 1MB all by itself). In release, we don't trigger this stack overflow, so it seems like the problem really is that the code in aws sdk, when not optimized, is pathologically stack-heavy. We increased the stack to 64MiB when running the problematic test.

i'm opening a ticket for that particular frame, but for what it's worth, in debug we have worse offenders when it comes to stack size. Warp consumes about 10MiB with its 60ish frames of <warp::filter::or::EitherFuture<T,U> as core::future::future::Future>::poll and <F as futures_core::future::TryFuture>::try_poll
