setting up an apache web server - PHP instructions incorrect?

I have just worked through this example and could not get the PHP to work.

The instructions say to enter

I believe the ; on the 3 examples needs to be replaced by ?>

As a newcomer to php I would like to see the complete index.php file, when it did not work I was not sure whether I had put it in the wrong place, in the body not the heaer etc.

okay, so I have learnt one thing, check the closed issues on github before raising a new one.

However, I believe I followed the instructions as posted and the php text was not displayed on my web site until I replaced the ; with ?> to close out the tags.

I will confirm later on when I can get back to my PI, it has been installing mysql for the last 30 minutes!

Yes it's a duplicate of #65. You need a semicolon at the end of a statement, but not closing php tags so

<php echo "hello world";

and

<php echo "hello world"; ?>

are both valid but

<php echo "hello world"

is not. However

<php echo "hello world" ?>

is also valid as the presence of closing php tags removes the need for a semicolon.

I have just installed the man wheezey release and updated everything.

I then followed the instructions again to install apache and php.

Terminating the line with a semi-colon does not work, having a space between the quotes and semi-colon sometimes works, replacing the semi-colon with ?> always works.

I have the same result as @windy54 with nginx and php-fpm.
Closing with semicolons only works if it is the last line in the file.
If there is any other content after, closing tags are needed.

The issues that this is listed as a duplicate of (#65 and #160) have been closed by 6e83bd1, so presumably this should have been closed too.
