react-grid-layout not creating column correctly

I was following the React.js for the Visual Learner tutorials online and came across an issue with the creation of columns. If you run the code at
https://github.com/michaelmang/React-for-the-Visual-Learner/tree/master/chapters/chapter%207 using the provided version (2.9.6) it runs perfectly. But when you run it with the current version on NPM, the functionality breaks. At first I thought it was me but as soon as I downgraded the issue was fixed.
