How to write equations

Rodolfo Viana edited this page Oct 18, 2026 · 1 revision

Cadenza typesets math written in LaTeX (with KaTeX), either as an equation object of its own or inline, in the middle of any text.

A slide with inline math in the text and an equation object, with the LaTeX source, the equation settings and the text marked

An equation object

Click Equation in the toolbar, then edit it in the Format inspector:

  1. Write the LaTeX source. The equation on the slide updates as you type. This one is

    \text{Extraction} = \frac{\text{TDS} \times m_{\text{drink}}}{m_{\text{coffee}}}
  2. Size, Color and Align set how it looks. With Fit box to equation on, the box always matches the equation; turn it off to size the box yourself.

Math inside text

  1. In any text box, table cell or shape, write math between dollar signs: $x^2$ for math within the line, $$…$$ for an equation centered on its own line. To write a plain dollar sign, type \$.

While you edit the text, the LaTeX source shows; the math is typeset again when you click away.

The Σ button in the Text section of the inspector inserts $…$ for you, with the caret inside.
