I am opening this discussion boards thing. Might be useful for asking questions, discussing stuff about the project / Linux desktop in general, troubleshooting, that sort of thing.

Not used this feature before so if it's rubbish then maybe I'll just stick to issues, hopefully it's decent though. 🥳

How has progress been? Last time I tried using it was in March, so I'm wondering how many things have been improved on! I'm eager to use this theme when it's done hahah

Perhaps my system is already too fucked. But I can't easily quit it because I have scripts installed that would take a lot of effort to replicate, and sadly I've never figured out how to fully move all of Firefox (with all caches and stuff) to a new install.

That page has a beautiful guide for Void linux users. Couldn't you give clear guidance to Linux Mint XFCE users? I swear I've tried it every which way for the past few years, and only now, with some help from ChatGPT, figured out how to brute force it. It would be very nice to have full functionality - bootloaders and all - with a setup guide than even a dumbuser like me could follow.

It may be possible to resolve if it is a case of dpkg being unhappy the files already exist (and it didn't know about them). I would suggest testing whether that really is the problem first by trying to install one package with no deps, eg. sudo dpkg -i libwintc-comgtk.deb (from inside the build output dir under xptc).

If it complains the files already exist, then it's likely safe to go ahead with overwriting them to install the package - using the following command to pass --force-overwrite to dpkg via apt when installing all the packages:
sudo apt-get -o Dpkg::Options::="--force-overwrite" install ./*

BTW the stuff regarding Void Linux is only because there are a couple extra things that must be done in addition to the usual steps. Void requires that the package manager be made aware of the packages first, then they can be installed. Debian-based distros don't require that step so it's possible to just install the whole lot immediately. 👍

It just ran into a similar error (something with "_apt"). I think it would be best if you tried installing the whole lot on Linux Mint XFCE yourself and listed the necessary commands in the installation guide.

I think my main daily driver is just fucked by now, but I would be willing to make a fresh install of Linux Mint XFCE on a secondary laptop tomorrow, and try to install it there, too, if you provided an easily-understood list of steps to do it.

I really think that going through the motions - installing LM XFCE and trying to get xfce-winxp-tc installed on it would give you an insight into the trouble we've been having. Especially for dummies who don't know what Sass even is.

This one you can ignore: N: Download is performed unsandboxed as root as file '/home/lapu/Downloads/xfce-winxp-tc-master/packaging/xptc/unknown.unknown(lapu).250714-0952/deb/std/x86_64/fre/libwintc-comgtk.deb' couldn't be accessed by user '_apt'. - pkgAcquire::Run (13: Permission denied) - it happens for offline packages (not fatal).

If you have E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) then there must be something dpkg doesn't like. You can do sudo dpkg -i <a deb file> to see what it is complaining about. 🤔

I'm not sure how it can be much easier when compiling from scratch, I think I actually did write those after testing on Linux Mint (it's one of the targets I have a VM for). I am actively working on #81 to provide a setup process for a proper release that would make compiling unnecessary. Everything takes time though. 😩

I understand this is difficult. I sincerely hope you can eventually manage some kind of Setup Wizard (I think the Chicago95 had one). You're just one person - I completely understand that making this very easy will take some time. I'm glad to have gotten even the basic luna blue theme working for me by brute-forcing it with ChatGPT.

Once again, I thank you for your effort. Hopefully one day in the coming years it'll be so simple on LM XFCE that even a simpleton like me can get it done on my senior parents' laptops and have them using this environment, which is just very familiar to us ~2000 folk. It is indeed beautiful, and pretty much, almost already, usable. Once again, thank you for even doing this.
