v1.0.15 - Trilogy maintenance and experimental Neural

Choose a tag to compare

@rubocopter rubocopter released this 29 Oct 11:24

v1.0.15 — Trilogy maintenance and experimental Neural

This is the current stable and recommended release of Penumbra VR Framework,
including all unreleased 1.0.14 maintenance work and the latest trilogy corrections.
The experimental label applies to the optional Neural component. Full-playthrough
and universal-headset validation remain separate evidence gates.

  • Requiem cable/anchored-rope interaction: the maintainer reports the cable and
corrected rope working. Oil ignition and complete puzzle progression remain
    separate acceptance gates.
  • Centered, enlarged messages/narration/video subtitles across the three games,
including Radio/ScreenGui and native introduction/ending text. Long ending
pages fit the HUD without changing reveal timing. New headset retests remain.
  • Trigger-clickable minus/plus controls in the VR menus.
  • Shared seated-height correction: leaning down no longer recalibrates the
chair baseline and counteracts the physical reach. Host-tested in all three
    consumers; new headset acceptance pending.
  • Render scale uses SteamVR's recommendation and each eye's projection. The
multiplier requires restarting in all three games. Requiem's live resizing
was rejected after severe headset distortion; the active pair now stays fixed.

Neural — experimental, optional, disabled by default

Setup includes the x64 companion and DirectNR forwarder. No compilation is
needed. After installing VR, open Maintenance, select an installed game,
then Import Neural (experimental) and select your local nvngx_dlssnr.dll.
The NVIDIA model is not included or downloaded by this release. Requirements
and guidance for obtaining it are maintained by
DirectNR; consult the
NVIDIA DLSS portal and applicable terms.
Do not substitute a Super Resolution, Frame Generation or Ray Reconstruction DLL.

Open VR Settings → Neural in each game. Values are stored independently and
apply during play. A moderate starting point is internal height 896, scale
50%, intensity 25%, 1 pass, style 0, center 100%, outer Off.
These are tuning suggestions, not a quality/performance guarantee. The internal
height is an inference proxy; it does not replace SteamVR's game render size.

Missing helper/model or unsupported initialization reports Unavailable and
keeps the original stereo image. A late frame reports Recovering, discards
stale output and can resume; a worker fault/stall bypasses processing. Turn it
off to restore original stereo. Changing the game render multiplier is separate
and requires restart. The order remains game → Neural → optional external frame
generation → headset; generated intermediate frames do not re-enter Neural.

Neural estimates rotation motion and uses constant depth. It has no real object
motion vectors/full scene depth. Image quality, lighting, stereo consistency,
latency and performance may be worse; this is not an official NVIDIA integration
or a claim of visual improvement. Compatible NVIDIA hardware/runtime is required.
Use Remove Neural in Maintenance to restore the previous local configuration;
full game-root uninstall also removes owned optional Neural. Modified owned files
are rejected rather than silently overwritten/deleted. Removing only Requiem
preserves the shared Black Plague Neural component.

CLI equivalent from the extracted package:

.\tools\Install-PenumbraNeural.ps1 -GamePath 'D:\Games\Penumbra\redist' -ModelPath 'D:\MyRuntime\nvngx_dlssnr.dll'
.\tools\Install-PenumbraNeural.ps1 -GamePath 'D:\Games\Penumbra\redist' -Restore

The new Setup, matching Source ZIP, build report and SHA256SUMS accompany this
release. Automated checks do not establish headset comfort or clean-PC readiness.
Requiem level04 water recovery and intermittent SDL startup crash remain unresolved.

v1.0.13 - Requiem maintenance candidate (headset validation pending)

Choose a tag to compare

@rubocopter rubocopter released this 27 Oct 19:54

Penumbra VR Framework 1.0.13 — Requiem maintenance candidate

Released 2026-10-27 as a pre-release. Headset validation pending.

The developer has not played or tested this version in-game or in a VR
headset. Both level08 corrections below have automated host validation only.
Completion of Requiem level08 has not been demonstrated.
This candidate makes
the corrections available for players to continue and report actual results.

Requiem level08 — Steam-themed level

  • Restore a bounded native inventory-pickup route for the glowing orb behind
the shack hatch. The controller ray retains native item eligibility and
    character-to-hit reach, a 1.9 m shared range cap, and independent hand/head
visibility. Character-only barriers remain intact; walls, the box and hatch
continue to obstruct selection. Move the box and open the hatch normally.
  • Recognize the keypad's native ScreenGui before choosing the VR input context
and deliver the tracked pointer through the existing native GUI interface.
Preserve native digit callbacks, validation and Close/Escape behavior. Release
held UI select/back buttons on focus or tracking loss to avoid retained clicks.

Both changes remain pending validation in a VR headset. They do not bypass
puzzle conditions, remove collision, move the orb or change the keypad solution.
The native Escape branch closes ScreenGui directly; no generic pause/reset
workaround was added.

Preserved corrections

Includes all preceding maintenance fixes, including sphere throwing with B,
controller-owned aim, lever constraints and direction, drawer endpoints, walking,
jumping and native Grab/Move/Push lifecycles. The protected throwing and mechanism
functions are unchanged by the level08 corrections.

Caelus reports that sphere throwing and levers now work perfectly after the
previous corrections. That is scoped tester feedback without a pinned installed
artifact hash; it is not developer testing or validation of this new package.

Validation and limits

The interaction implementation passed 79 Framework host tests in both Debug
and Release
and 298 Overture Release checks. Targeted regressions cover
pickup reach/eligibility/occlusion and GUI context, pointer, button edges,
cancel/re-entry and focus recovery. Native boundaries in consumer tests are
characterized fixtures; the actual level scripts and puzzle progression were
not executed. Final installer checks and hashes are recorded in the
artifact validation record.

Level04 water/crouch recovery and the intermittent SDL startup crash have no
confirmed fix. Level05 buttons/cabinets, broader progression, other controller
hardware and independent clean-PC acceptance retain their separate open gates.

Download and update

Download PenumbraVR-Setup-1.0.13.exe.
Close the affected games before updating. Use the unified installer and existing
update workflow. Matching committed source, dependency sources, build provenance
and SHA-256 checksums accompany this candidate.

Eventual acceptance: acquire the orb after the three plates and normal box/hatch
steps; operate or cancel the keypad and return to gameplay without pausing.

Development assistance: OpenAI Codex. Existing Rework and third-party
credits/licenses remain included. No generated art/audio was added.

v1.0.12 - Interaction maintenance (headset validation pending)

@rubocopter rubocopter released this 27 Oct 15:09

Penumbra VR Framework 1.0.12 — Interaction maintenance

Released 2026-10-27. Headset validation pending.

The developer has not played or tested this version in-game or in a VR
headset.
The corrections have automated host validation only. This maintenance
release makes the current fixes available so players can continue their games
and report whether the affected interactions now work. It does not establish
that the reported progression blockers are resolved in the actual game.

Requiem throwing and B / Examine

  • Aim native assisted throws with the controller holding the object, including
free-body Move and Push interactions. Push keeps the original game's
horizontal launch convention; native throw strength and puzzle rules remain.
  • Use the current controller direction after turning or ladder travel instead
of reusing the camera direction captured when the interaction began.
  • Prevent Push cancellation or ordinary release from accidentally triggering
the B / Examine launch. Handle stale tracking and Interact/Examine ordering
without falling back to an outdated camera direction.
  • Retain the earlier gesture-release and independent Examine/ladder fixes.

Levers, switches and native buttons

  • Make Requiem consume the centre-of-mass hinge correction already used by
Black Plague. The shared correction also serves Framework-owned Overture.
It addresses a reproduced disagreement between the VR velocity command and
the native hinge constraint, without changing joint limits or script events.
  • Restore Rework's separate head-to-visible-palm selection query for Requiem
    native interaction areas. It keeps native range and line-of-sight checks;
ordinary physical grabs keep their existing reach.
  • Compare area and physical contact priority from a common origin instead of
mixing palm distances with distances from offset rays.
  • Retain the existing filing-cabinet slider endpoint correction from v1.0.11.
No second drawer workaround or global lever-direction inversion was added.

Validation and remaining issues

Debug and Release Framework builds pass all 78 automated tests; the
Overture Release product passes 298 checks. New regressions reproduce the
previous pivot drift and selection failures before correction. The mechanism
test uses the shipped Newton library; native selection/action boundaries in
consumer tests are fixtures. Neither is a running-game or headset test.

The following remain unverified or unresolved:

  • Actual lever attachment, trembling, comfort and direction on the reported
mechanisms. Individual mechanisms retain their authored native behavior.
  • Requiem level03 bottle progression, level05 generator/hatch/door buttons and
cabinet operation, and level07 sphere progression after the throwing changes.
  • The level07 sphere's physical stoppage at the opening: no confirmed cause or
    collision/puzzle change.
  • The level04 underwater crouch/recovery problem and intermittent SDL startup
    crash: no confirmed fix.
  • Other controller hardware, independent clean-PC acceptance and full-game
progression. Historical headset acceptance does not transfer to this build.

Download and update

Download PenumbraVR-Setup-1.0.12.exe.
Close the affected games before updating. The unified installer includes the
current trilogy fixes and retains the existing installation/update workflow.
Matching committed source, dependency sources, build provenance and SHA-256
checksums accompany the installer.

Development assistance: OpenAI Codex. Rework and third-party credits/licenses
remain in the included source and notices. No generated art/audio was added.

Build provenance

Artifacts are built from clean source 9fbcd15. Build metadata and SHA-256 checksums accompany the download. The hosted checks are automated host checks and do not constitute developer gameplay or headset validation.

v1.0.11 - Installer, Overture input and Requiem maintenance fixes

Choose a tag to compare

@rubocopter rubocopter released this 26 Oct 10:34

Released 2026-10-26.

Installation and removal

  • Recover interrupted Black Plague/Requiem installs using the current journal,
while retaining validation of older journals, paths, snapshots and hashes.
  • Uninstall tolerates preference files deleted by the user, rejects directory
and junction conflicts, and verifies the original ALUT bytes before removing
the backup. Failed restoration remains recoverable.
  • When uninstall removes an owned Spanish translation without an original,
repair that specific selection in default/personal settings to the game's
    bundled English language. Keep valid custom languages and later preferences;
include the affected settings in transaction rollback.
  • Setup extraction accepts new destinations with a trailing slash or backslash.
Existing destinations and malformed payloads remain rejected.

Overture input

  • Keep the acquiring interaction hand until the logical hold ends, including
a second trigger press and tracking-loss cancellation.
  • Emit release edges when an individual SteamVR binding becomes inactive.
  • Use the same tracked hand for UI pointer geometry and buttons, including the
alternate hand and legacy fallback. A hand switch releases the old drag and
    waits for a fresh press.
  • Recenter orientation before a player body exists and from the current head
pose while paused, preserving height calibration and subsequent movement.
  • Correct the diagnostic that rejects an obsolete local deployment package.

Requiem interactions and cleanup

  • Preserve native foreground occlusion independently on each hand ray; an
unobstructed finger ray can still acquire its own valid target.
  • Keep native ScriptArea selection and area/solid arbitration for the reported
level05 generator, hatch and door buttons, including palm-overlap priority.
  • Temporarily suspend native drawer endpoint stickiness only for a VR-owned
Move child attached to a static/world parent. Restore unchanged values before
native Leave; keep joints, limits, scripts and overrides authoritative.
  • Drain pending and committed native interactions before removing their Leave
hooks. Destroy palm shapes on their native owning thread, including menu or
player-less updates. Timeout/failure retains a retryable partial teardown.
  • Consume turn-reset requests on the native update owner instead of modifying
its state concurrently from a control thread.
  • Add physical capsule-height diagnostics for the level04 sewer report.

Evidence and remaining problems

The fixes have actual-consumer and isolated filesystem host regressions:
77 Framework tests in Release and Debug, plus 298 Overture checks.
The versioned release process separately verifies the exact final Setup,
source archive, pinned dependencies, PE identities and installer transactions.
These results do not establish new in-game/headset acceptance.

Requiem level04 water recovery has no confirmed fix. This release does not
alter buoyancy, gravity or vertical VR impulses. Level05 repeated button
activation and drawer endpoints, level03 bottle progression/throw/cue usability,
and new Overture input behavior still need focused headset feedback. The
intermittent Requiem SDL startup crash remains unresolved. Existing historical
headset acceptance does not transfer automatically to the new binaries.

Download PenumbraVR-Setup-1.0.11.exe.
Close all affected games before updating. Matching committed source, dependency
sources, build provenance and SHA-256 checksums accompany the unified installer.

Development assistance: OpenAI Codex. Rework and third-party credits/licenses
remain in the included source and notices. No generated art/audio was added.

Build provenance

Artifacts were built from clean source a19afa9; release tag 6248a04 adds
the exact artifact/validation documentation. The hosted CI run
passes on 1ebd854, whose only post-tag change supplies the OpenAL null backend
before test-process startup on the headless runner. Release payload hashes are
unchanged. No new live/headset acceptance is implied.

v1.0.10 - Requiem throwing and interaction fixes

Choose a tag to compare

@rubocopter rubocopter released this 24 Oct 22:24

Released 2026-10-25.

Requiem throwing and interactions

  • Assisted throwing now follows the controller holding the object. Aim that
controller, then press Examine (default B in the right-handed Touch
layout). Left-handed/custom bindings may assign Examine differently.
  • Keep the original game's throw power, mass profile, CanBeThrown checks and
puzzle/script behavior. Ordinary gesture release retains its existing
Rework velocity gains/caps; invalid focus, UI or stale tracking references
    cannot contribute release momentum.
  • Examine and ladder selection now have an independent tracked-head query,
so their cues can appear while the hand points elsewhere. Examine refreshes
its head target when pressed. Physical hand interaction, native distances,
description-once rules, ladder guards and foreground occlusion remain intact.

This maintenance update responds to Caelus's Quest 3 level03 bottle throw and
selection report. The reported walking/jumping improvement and brief favorable
audio observation are scoped feedback without an exact installed hash.
Movement, jumping and audio are unchanged in this update.

All 68 Framework host tests pass. Regressions cover the actual adapter, native throw ordering and mass
profiles with the shipped Newton DLL, independent head/hand targets and hook
restoration. They do not establish level03 completion or headset aiming/cue
usability. Those checks remain open in the focused checklist.
Requiem's intermittent startup crash remains unresolved.

Penumbra VR Framework 1.0.9

@rubocopter rubocopter released this 23 Oct 17:40

Released 2026-10-23.

Movement and jumping across the trilogy

  • Use a common normal movement profile: 3 m/s walking and 4.5 m/s sprinting
at the default movement setting. Keep the physical headset translation bound
separate from stick travel so low update rates or mixed input do not truncate
    the requested stick movement.
  • Connect Requiem's second held-jump query, which could clear a valid VR hold
and shorten the jump. Preserve native player-state and collision ownership.
  • Adapt Overture's normal jump to the independently verified Black Plague/
Requiem profile across headset update rates. Combine keyboard and controller
Jump once, preserving native tap/hold, release and airborne repress behavior,
    crouched takeoff and scripted/solver overrides.

Positional audio, uphill motion and filing cabinets

  • Update the Black Plague/Requiem audio listener from the tracked central head
pose, including physical head turns and room-scale translation. Restore the
native listener on tracking/focus/presentation loss and audio context changes.
  • Bound accepted uphill step advance by the measured surface rise, addressing
native overshoot on shallow slopes. Keep native collision selection and one
physics update; do not smooth or offset the camera to hide the motion.
  • Allow Black Plague filing-cabinet drawers to leave their sticky closed/open
endpoint while held by a VR hand. Preserve native joints, travel limits,
    scripts and release restoration.

For feedback, include the game, Framework version, headset/controllers,
connection/audio route, active bindings, map/save location and reproduction
steps. See the focused acceptance checklist.

@rubocopter rubocopter released this 16 Oct 07:00

Released 2026-10-16.

Black Plague interaction and progression

  • Fix contact selection and native Examine/SaveArea routing without extending
physical grabs through walls or replacing native scripted activation.
  • Improve articulated prop acquisition, including the dog/altar sequence,
bucket/container and handle, and the anchored arm puzzle. Jointed bodies
retain native constraints, masses, limits and lifecycle.
  • Prevent barrels from receiving the extra camera-directed impulse when a
VR-owned Push is released. Correct offset-center-of-mass hinge motion so the
wall lever reaches its native puzzle activation threshold.
  • Activate fixed computer terminals from their native usable range. Their HPL
GUI cursor and popup buttons now receive tracked pointer and native mouse
press/release events, including the incoming-call Answer button.

Readability and presentation

  • Center Examine/gameplay messages horizontally and as a complete vertical
block, with twice the native font size and line spacing. Preserve native
wrapping metrics, text, fades, black-text mode and shadow layers.
  • Hide equipped flashlight/glowstick geometry during UI rendering and restore
its exact visibility afterward. Equip and light state are preserved; headset
confirmation of this presentation change remains separate.
  • Keep the existing user SubtitleScale setting and native radio/menu text
behavior. Include bounded computer pointer/click diagnostics for reports.

The maintainer accepted the focused prop/puzzle corrections, computer reach,
cursor/Answer and enlarged centered text on the local candidates identified in
the acceptance record. This does not imply
full-game, other-device or exact new-Setup headset acceptance. Overture and
Requiem have versioned packaging updates with no new gameplay changes.

Download PenumbraVR-Setup-1.0.8.exe.
Close the games before updating. The installer retains recorded component
selections, original-file backups and settings under its existing ownership
rules. Matching source, dependency sources, SHA-256 checksums and build report
are provided with the installer.

Broader articulated contact, initial dog acquisition, low-obstacle/leaning world
correction, flashlight attachment and equipped-light menu visibility remain
focused regression gates. The physical-only attribution and step-normal changes
have host evidence; they do not close low-obstacle traversal. Requiem's
intermittent startup cause, Index finger feedback and independent clean-PC or
other-controller validation remain open.

@rubocopter rubocopter released this 10 Oct 21:50

Released 2026-10-10.

Input reliability

  • Black Plague and Requiem: digital actions now emit a release when an
individual binding becomes inactive or stops reporting its release edge.
This prevents interaction and UI actions from remaining held. Context and
dominant-hand changes retain the existing suppression of unintended edges.
  • Movement settings: the configured movement dead zone survives temporary
focus loss, input-read failure and complete binding inactivity. Returning to
gameplay keeps the same stick response; an explicit reset still uses defaults.
  • Analog safety: non-finite axes are rejected, non-finite dead-zone values
use the schema default, and finite axes are bounded before radial rescaling.
Controller freshness checks reuse the already validated grip-pose flags.

Trilogy acceptance and maintenance

  • The maintainer accepted the locally installed trilogy checklist, including
consistent first-level English/Spanish VR Settings, BP mixed-input obstacle
movement, Overture edge visibility/reach and input/focus recovery. The scoped
    acceptance record identifies those exact
installed binaries. Device-specific conditional tests are kept separate.
  • Update the capability ledger, configuration guide, regression checklist,
supported-build record and roadmap to reflect this acceptance.
  • Add Windows CI fixtures for installer configuration, prerequisites, release
identity, bilingual UI state and diagnostics/privacy without game binaries or
    VR hardware.
  • Supply the unified installer, exact committed source, pinned dependency
    sources, checksums and build report.

Download PenumbraVR-Setup-1.0.7.exe.
Close the games before updating. Existing settings, selected translations,
Overture texture enhancements and original-file backups are retained by the
installer's recorded component selections.

The reported Requiem starts passed on the tested installation. Its intermittent
startup crash still has no demonstrated root-cause fix. Broader progression,
other controller families, Index finger feedback and independent clean-PC
coverage remain open. Acceptance of the preceding local build does not imply
headset testing of the newly versioned Setup artifact.

@rubocopter rubocopter released this 08 Oct 00:21

Released 2026-10-08.

  • VR Settings: the entry now occupies the same first-level position in the
main and pause menus of Overture, Black Plague and Requiem, in English/Spanish.
Requiem gains its native page, live turn/crouch/height edits and height calibration.
  • Black Plague: physical use of the initial vice and easier locker acquisition;
physical-contact step filtering; mixed joystick/HMD movement can negotiate
eligible movable obstacles without the previous static-only rejection.
  • Requiem: correct eye height after the intro without opening inventory,
physical/button crouch, stable post-physics slope height, tracked fullscreen UI
    and persisted turn/crouch settings.
  • Overture: logic cadence follows the headset refresh rate with a 90 Hz
fallback; shared visibility covers both asymmetric eyes before per-eye rendering.

Download PenumbraVR-Setup-1.0.6.exe.
Close the games and run the installer to update. Existing personal settings,
custom bindings and original-file backups are preserved. Matching source,
checksums and the build report accompany the installer.

The maintainer accepted the preceding BP/Requiem feedback fixes; the new shared
menu routes and mixed-obstacle correction have host tests and await scoped
headset confirmation. Overture's new cadence/visibility changes, non-Sense
controller coverage and independent clean-PC acceptance remain separate.
Requiem's intermittent startup crash is still under investigation.

Penumbra VR Framework v1.0.5

Choose a tag to compare

@rubocopter rubocopter released this 04 Oct 10:09

Released 2026-10-04. This update brings together all improvements since v1.0.0
and replaces the intermediate v1.0.1–v1.0.4 releases.

  • Controls: corrected Valve Index thumbsticks and conflicting button bindings,
improved pointing defaults, and added a reference for all eight controller
profiles. Overture recovers missing stick actions independently.
  • Overture: improved drawer and mechanism selection, removed the binding-menu
shortcut associated with the reported pre-menu crash, and corrected focus-loss
handling and stale controller aim poses.
  • Black Plague: improved tracked-hand pushing and stick direction for heavy
objects, preserved eye height while turning, and corrected mass-amplified hand
nudges. Held objects now survive temporary presentation gaps while tracking
    remains valid.
  • Performance: reduced diagnostic logging stalls. The maintainer completed
the Black Plague tutorial without the previously reported freezes or box drops.
  • Installer: clearer preparation/progress feedback and responsive background
operations, with existing settings, optional components and backups preserved.

Download PenumbraVR-Setup-1.0.5.exe.
Close the games and run the installer to update. If SteamVR retains an older
custom binding, select the updated bundled default for that game and restart it.
Matching source, checksums and a build report are included with the release.

Overture and the Black Plague tutorial have maintainer gameplay feedback on the
preceding local fixes; that does not validate every game or controller on this
new installer. Excessive Black Plague collision recoil, intermittent Requiem
startup failure and the reported finger mismatch remain under investigation.
