Passive Focus Lock

The Passive Focus Lock system is one of the core hypnosis mechanics in PixelTrance. It represents the subtle buildup of a subject's attention and susceptibility over time, even without direct interaction.

This mechanic rewards players who strategically maintain visual presence or proximity, creating a slow-burn path toward trance.

Note: currently the gain on this is very high for testing purposes, and will be lowered.

How It Works

When a player or mob is exposed to a hypnotic entity or item (such as a hypnotist player, a special mob, or a hypnotic tool in use), they begin to passively accumulate Focus. This effect is subtle and does not require the subject to willingly engage—it simply builds up while they are within line of sight or range.

Once Focus reaches a certain threshold, the subject becomes Focus Locked.

Focus Lock Effects

When a target enters Focus Lock:

  • They will find it more difficult to look away from the source of hypnosis.
  • Trance accumulation speeds up.
  • Certain resistance options may be reduced or temporarily disabled.
  • Visual and audio effects may subtly encourage fixation.

Focus Lock does not fully control a player—it is a mid-point toward deeper trance.

Breaking Focus Lock

Players or mobs can break a Focus Lock in a few ways:

  • Line of sight is broken for several seconds.
  • A strong resistance ability is triggered.
  • External disruption occurs (e.g., being hit, strong environmental effects).

Some traits or perks will reduce Focus gain or increase the time needed to become locked.

Strategic Use

Hypnotists can use Passive Focus Lock to soften targets before initiating an active trance attempt. For example:

  • Holding a pendulum while staying just within view.
  • Walking slowly around a subject to maintain line of sight.
  • Teaming up with allies to keep a target distracted but visually engaged.

On the flip side, players aware of this system can take steps to resist or avoid being locked:

  • Look away when they sense hypnotic activity.
  • Use terrain or cover to block line of sight.
  • Equip resistance perks that delay Focus accumulation.

Summary

The Passive Focus Lock system encourages spatial and visual strategy in both hypnosis and resistance. It’s about reading the room, staying aware of your surroundings, and understanding the slow build-up to trance.

"Sometimes, it’s not about what you do—it’s about what you see... and what sees you."

Stay alert, or find yourself drawn in without realizing it.
