Tacet 1.7.1.1 — Small bug fixes
Small bug fixes
If you already use Tacet, it updates itself. New install: open the .dmg, drag Tacet to Applications, and if macOS says it's damaged run xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Tacet.app once.
Tacet 1.7.1 — Developer Mode, faster downloads and a quicker assistant
Developer Mode, faster downloads and a quicker Tacet Assistant
- Developer Mode (Settings › Advanced): a Develop menu with the Web Inspector (⌥⌘I), Console, element picker, page source (⌥⌘U, and
view-source:addresses), Responsive Design Mode (⌥⌘E) with devices, rotation, custom sizes and user agents, plus page tools: edit the page, outlines, turn off styles or JavaScript, empty caches, clear a site's data, page info, open in another browser - Downloads show speed and time left, pause and resume (even after quitting Tacet), retry, Open With…, drag a finished file out, and search in the Library. Cancelling deletes the partial file; quitting with downloads running asks first. Downloads and Tacet Plugins are in the Window menu
- Tacet Assistant is shorter, has a personality (Settings › AI) and answers much faster from the command bar
- Sums in the command bar: type 12*7+3 and get the result, with no AI and no network
- History › Reopen Closed Window, and ⇧⌘T brings back a window when there's no closed tab
- Pages that failed offline load again when the connection comes back
- Fixes: a freeze while macOS asked for Keychain access, a memory leak in the command bar, two possible crashes, and more work moved off the main thread so Tacet stays responsive
If you already use Tacet, it updates itself. New install: open the .dmg, drag Tacet to Applications, and if macOS says it's damaged run xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Tacet.app once.
Tacet 1.7.0.3 — Minor bug and safety fixes and better data exportation
*Minor bug and safety fixes and better data exportation and the base for 1.7.1 which is coming soon
- Back Up Everything (Settings › General › Move to another Mac): one file with all of Tacet — settings and plugins, open tabs and Spaces, history, bookmarks, Reading List, highlights, rules, automations, saved passwords, AI keys and the sites you're signed in to, for every profile
- The backup is encrypted with a password you choose (AES-GCM, PBKDF2-SHA256); without it the file can't be opened
- Restore from Backup on another Mac puts everything back and restarts Tacet
- Minor bug and safety fixes
If you already use Tacet, it updates itself. New install: open the .dmg, drag Tacet to Applications, and if macOS says it's damaged run xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Tacet.app once.
Tacet 1.7.0.2 — Minor fixes
Minor fixes
- Closing the "You didn't send what you wrote here" banner (Put It Back, Copy, Discard or ×) could quit Tacet. Fixed.
- The website shows the current version and links straight to it.
If you already use Tacet, it updates itself. New install: open the .dmg, drag Tacet to Applications, and if macOS says it's damaged run xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Tacet.app once.
Tacet 1.7.0.1
Safety fix for Spaces. With tabs along the top, a Space couldn't be deleted and Spaces couldn't be turned off.
- Turn Off Spaces… (Space button, Tab menu, command bar, Settings › General › Spaces): every Space is removed and nothing is lost — the tabs of your other Spaces come into the window, each as a tab group
- Delete or rename any Space from the Space button; deleting the one you're in keeps its tabs
- Settings › General › Spaces lists them all
If you already use Tacet, it updates itself. New install: open the .dmg, drag Tacet to Applications, and if macOS says it's damaged run xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Tacet.app once.
Tacet 1.7
Spaces. A Space keeps a whole set of tabs, pinned tabs, groups and split view, with a note to yourself. Leave School, open Coding, and come back to School as you left it.
- The icons at the bottom of the sidebar, the Space button at the top in the other layouts, Tab › Spaces, or the command bar
- ⌃⌘← and ⌃⌘→ go to the previous and next Space
- Each Space belongs to its profile, so sign-ins never cross profiles
Find pages by what they said. Tacet keeps the text of the pages you read, on your Mac only, so a sentence you remember finds the page again, with the passage. Search History or type in the command bar. Never kept: private windows, pages with a password field and sites you exclude (Settings › Shield).
Read, highlight, take notes
- ⌥-click a link to preview it over the page; Esc closes it, ⌘↩ keeps it as a tab, Side by Side opens split view
- Select text › right-click › Highlight, in five colours, with a note. Highlights come back when you return
- Library › Highlights: search them, open the page at the passage, copy or export as Markdown (Obsidian and other notes apps)
Work your way
- Opening rules (Settings › General): send a site's links to its open tab, a profile, a Space or a private window
- Unsent text: if a page reloads before you send what you wrote, Tacet offers it back. Never passwords, cards or private windows
- Automations (Settings › Automations): your own steps, run from the command bar, Tab › Automations or ⌃⌥⌘1 to ⌃⌥⌘9. No AI needed
Passkeys. Tacet can't use passkeys directly yet (Apple gives that permission only to browsers in its developer program). When a site asks for one, Sign In with Safari signs you in there with Touch ID and brings the sign-in back to Tacet.
Safer and lighter
- Tacet Assistant asks before any button it can't judge, always before sending, buying, deleting or publishing; Allow on This Page covers the rest of a page, and Stop stops at once
- A saved password goes in only on the site it was saved for, even if the page changes during Touch ID
- A site with a broken certificate is never opened over HTTP behind your back
- Safer updates, redirects checked against the local network, extension permissions remembered, everything saved when you quit
- History beyond the newest 5,000 pages stays on disk and is still searched; long conversations are fitted to the model
Install
Open the .dmg and drag Tacet to Applications. Tacet isn't notarized yet, so if macOS says it "is damaged and can't be opened", run this once in Terminal, then open it normally:
xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Tacet.app
If you already use Tacet or Lumen, it updates itself.
Tacet 1.6.5
A new icon. Seal, corona is Tacet's icon now: a vermilion seal with a corona of rays carved in it. If you prefer another, sixteen alternatives are in Settings › Appearance › App icon, and in a new "Choose an icon" step of the setup: Gold seal, Half seal, Seal, t., Half seal, t., t. coin, t., ocean, t., half lit, Half moon, Half moon, t, Half moon, soft, Half moon, corona, Corona, gold, Corona t, Corona t, gold, Last light, and Eclipse, the icon Tacet had until now.
- The Dock shows your choice at once, and it's set on Tacet.app so Finder shows it too
- It comes back by itself after an update
- Sites installed as apps keep their own icons
Fixes from your reports
- In the compact layout the whole top bar moves the window: the empty part of the tab row, the gaps between tabs and the strip above the page (#1)
- Sign-in fields built from web components, like Reddit's, are filled from your saved passwords (#2)
- The setup now says clearly that Tacet can't read the passwords saved in Safari or the Passwords app, and how to bring them over (Passwords › File › Export All Passwords, then Import)
- An import from Safari that macOS blocked until Tacet had Full Disk Access finishes by itself as soon as the access is on, and a part that can't be read no longer stops the others (#3)
Also
- A new website: quieter, faster, and still making no request except to GitHub
- A "Welcome to Tacet 1.6.5" screen shows all of this the first time
Tacet 1.6.4
Tacet Plugins (beta). A store of small plugins made for Tacet and checked by its developer, that work on every Mac. Open it with ⇧⌘P (Window › Tacet Plugins), the store button in the sidebar, or the command bar. Every card says who made the plugin and whether it's verified; plugins are signed and checked file by file before they install, run in a space of their own that pages can't reach, and update by themselves.
23 plugins to start with, including:
- Cutout, by scadavide55 (scadavide55.github.io/cutout): remove the background of any picture on your Mac, with four AI engines and no upload. Hover a picture and click ✂ Cutout (⌥⇧X), or right-click it › Remove Background with Cutout. The engines download once when you add it (413 MB), then it works offline
- Focus Timer, Smart Dark Mode, Clean Links on Copy, Bigger YouTube Captions
- YouTube without Shorts, YouTube Focus, Hide Comments, Copy as Markdown, Reading Progress, Video Speed, Picture in Picture, Keyboard Navigation, Word Count, Back to Top
- Google, Just Results, Amazon Without Sponsored, X Without Distractions, Stack Overflow, Clean, GitHub Wide, Old Reddit, AMP to Original, Other Sites in New Tabs
Extensions menu
- The puzzle button in the toolbar lists every plugin and extension. A click does what each is for: opens it, runs it, turns it on or off, or shows how to use it. Arrows, Return and Esc work
- Pin any plugin or extension to the toolbar, or right-click a plugin to turn it off for one site only
- Style plugins switch on and off on open pages without a reload, and one plugin's error never stops the others
Tacet Assistant (beta)
- Knows everything about Tacet: ask "how do I open Tacet Plugins?" or "what are all of Tacet's features?", and it answers from the built-in Tacet Guide with the exact menu or shortcut. It knows its version, and that it was called Lumen Assistant
- Uses your plugins when you ask: "remove the background of this picture", "copy this page as Markdown"
- Ollama and LM Studio are providers of their own: no key, Tacet finds their models and which read pictures, and says plainly when the app isn't running
Tabs and windows
- Pinned tabs keep their site, as in Arc: links to other sites open in a new tab. Right-click a pinned tab › Back to Pinned Address
- ⇧⌘T brings back every tab you closed together (Close Other Tabs, Close Tabs Below, a group), each in its place
- Middle-click a tab to close it
- With profiles, Tacet asks who's browsing when it opens
- Windows snap to the screen's edges and corners when you drag them, and full screen no longer leaves an empty gap
Also
- Move your settings, search shortcuts, site styles, profiles and plugins to another Mac in one file: Settings › General › Move to another Mac
- The password check is always in Settings › Passwords, and the search shortcuts table lines up again
- A "Welcome to Tacet 1.6.4" screen shows all of this the first time
Tacet 1.6.3
Bring your Arc sidebar. Arc stops working on December 22. Tacet now reads your Spaces, Favorites, pinned tabs and folders straight from Arc: Favorites become pinned tabs, and each Space and folder a tab group that loads only when you open it. Choose File › Import from Another Browser…, then Arc. More at Switch from Arc.
Tacet Shield
- Shows how many ads and trackers it blocked on the page, on the site and since you opened Tacet, and from which sites
- Rejects optional cookies for you on the consent banners sites use most, instead of only hiding them
- Fingerprinting protection: canvas, WebGL and audio readings change slightly for each site, and the exact graphics chip and core count are hidden
- New optional lists in Settings › Shield: AdGuard Base, Fanboy Annoyances, and AdGuard's hidden (CNAME) trackers
Tabs
- Hover over a tab for a preview with the page, its site and how much memory it uses
- Sleeping tabs show the page as you left it while they load, then scroll back to where you were: no white flash, no jump to the top
- Search your tabs with ⌥⌘F
- Tab groups fold and unfold on the click itself, without the short wait
Reading
- Translate pages on your Mac with Apple's translation (⌥⌘T, macOS 15 or later): nothing leaves your Mac
- Read pages aloud (⌥⌘A)
- Focus Mode (⇧⌘J): only the page, nothing else
Tacet Assistant (beta)
- Ask from the command bar: type a question, choose "Ask Tacet Assistant", and the answer appears right there, searching the web if needed. Close it with ✕ or open it in the full chat
- Says when it stops after too many steps, and marks chats you stopped
Passwords
- Password check in Settings › Passwords: passwords found in data breaches (via Have I Been Pwned, which only ever sees the first 5 characters of a password's SHA-1 hash), reused or easy to guess
Under the hood
- Tacet now has its own signing certificate. After this update macOS may ask once more to let Tacet use its Keychain items: choose Always Allow, and future updates won't ask again. Updates must now carry the same certificate
- Favicons are only fetched from the page itself or public addresses, never your local network
- The list of domain suffixes behind site grouping and passwords updates weekly
- Apps installed from sites move to ~/Applications/Tacet Apps and are rebuilt when Tacet updates
- Turning off an extension closes its pages
- Disk images are made and opened with diskutil
Tacet 1.6.2 (formerly Lumen)
Lumen is now Tacet. Same browser, new name: there were already other browsers called Lumen, and the name sounded too much like an AI product. Tacet is the mark in music for silence, where an instrument stays quiet, like the ads and trackers Tacet keeps out.
Updating from Lumen
- Your tabs, windows, passwords, AI key, settings, history, bookmarks and extensions all carry over
- Lumen updates itself to Tacet as usual. After you quit it once, Lumen.app in your Applications folder is renamed Tacet.app
- A short "Welcome to Tacet 1.6.2" screen explains the change the first time it opens
- The project now lives at github.com/scadavide55/Tacet, and the website at scadavide55.github.io/Tacet
New
- New icon, "Eclissi": a dark disc in front of the sun, leaving a crescent of light. The setup, the About window and the error page use it too
- About Tacet says "formerly Lumen"
Fixes
- The setup's "How Lumen works" and "Keyboard shortcuts" pages fit their window again instead of being cut off at the edges
- Removing an extension also deletes the data it stored
- Tabs sent to a new window come back to the window they came from if the new one doesn't open
Install
Open the .dmg and drag Tacet to Applications. Tacet isn't notarized yet, so if macOS says it "is damaged and can't be opened", run this once in Terminal, then open it normally:
