Description

Filing a bug for Soft Linden.

Reproduction steps

1. On a Mac, with Audio Technica AT2020USB+ microphone connected.
2. Set the system-level input to 50%.
3. Log in with the 7.2.0.16729091892 viewer.
4. Visit a WebRTC region.
5. Speak into the microphone while watching voice indicator for green lines.

Observed: The voice indicator for self does not turn green.

Expected: Green voice bars for self should be visible to indicate your voice is transmitting.

Workaround: Crank up the gain both in macOS settings and in SL. But then it also picks up a ton of room noise. With all other apps (and with Vivox regions), keeping the system-level input at 50% works well.

Added details:

• In the initial scenario, the voice indicator green do appear, but not until speaking consistently for 20-30 seconds.

• The issue doesn't reproduce if I use the microphone built into my webcam (Logi 4k Pro). The key difference is that the AT2020USB+ is a directional cardiod microphone. It would pick up very little room noise at normal input levels.

My hunch is that if we do have automatic gain control, it is much too slow on the attack. If it slowly increases gain from room noise with non-directional microphones, that might explain why gain from other microphones is adjusted sufficiently by the time users speak. My cranking the gain introduces enough room noise to get above whatever squelch level activates gain adjustment.

Can you uncheck the various AGC, noise cancellation, and echo cancellation checkboxes in the sound preferences panel? That might help us determine if it's audio processing.

I'm currently having trouble reproducing. Each time previously, it's been in SLCorps Checkin. I'll test again this Thursday, or if you can think of what might be different about those sessions (other than lots of other people in channel?), I can try reproducing it again before then.
