Shotts 0.10.0
Scrolling capture:
- Memory at the largest picture is about a fifth of what it was (291 MB, not 1.4 GB), and the
picture opens at once. - A spinner, a typing indicator, or a status line in a sticky bar no longer breaks the capture,
and a page with only a few lines on it is followed to its end. - Shotts waits for the area's first frame before it scrolls, so the top is never lost; it speeds
back up after slowing; and the pointer goes back where it was when it stops. - A display change, or quitting, keeps what was captured and opens it.
- Pictures are in the display's own colors.
Recording:
- Keys never show typing: a key counts as a shortcut only with Control or Command; Option and
Shift alone show only with keys that act on their own (arrows, Return, Tab, Escape, F-keys).
A held key shows once. - A Save or Copy chosen while the file is still being made finishes even if the window is
closed, and Save never leaves a cut-off file under your name. Closing still asks until the
recording has really been saved, copied, or dragged out. - The quiet calibration tone plays only on a device's first recording with the Mac's sound,
and again after a month, not every time; stopping no longer waits for it. - Turning Keys on asks for Input Monitoring then, not over the recording. Recording without
the microphone or keys after the alert leaves the app you were in at the front. - The recording's last frames no longer catch the outline and drawings coming down.
Quitting and the hot keys:
- Quit asks before losing a recording still being finished or saved, words being typed into a
new text, or ashottsrecording's files; quitting during a scrolling capture opens it. - A cancelled log-out no longer turns the quit question off.
- F10, ⇧⌘2, and their Option forms do nothing while a capture, recording, or scrolling capture
is being set up or an alert is open, so an editor never lands in what is being captured.
The command line (shotts):
- Allow Command-Line Capture can no longer be turned on by a launch argument.
- Every request is checked in Shotts as well as in the tool, within bounds:
--delayand
--durationup to a day,--width16 to 16384, at most 16 files, and--fpschecked even
with no file named. A request a script makes by hand can no longer crash Shotts. - A tool that stops reading (Control-Z, a script reading only at the end) can no longer freeze
Shotts. - Files are made where nothing else can reach them and placed only once all are made; a
default name never replaces an existing file but takes " 2", " 3"… stopworks while a recording runs even with the switch off.- New exit code 6 (
unavailable) when Shotts is not installed or does not answer. --audio system, micis gone: useboth.shottsopens the Shotts it is inside, and window titles with control characters print safely.- F10 and
shottswait for each other instead of capturing each other's windows; F10 stops a
shottscountdown, and beeps while a request is otherwise busy.
Smaller and safer builds:
- The app is 10% smaller and
shotts38% smaller. - A debug build is its own app, with its own permissions, so it can never lend the release's
Screen Recording permission to another program.

Shotts 0.9.2
- ⇧⌘2 captures, in place of 0.9.1's ⇧⌘4, and Option-⇧⌘2 brings the last capture back, on any
keyboard and with nothing to set up: no fn, as F10 needs on a top row that controls the Mac,
and no turning off macOS's own ⇧⌘4. F10 works as before.
Install with Homebrew:
brew install --cask shreeve/tap/shotts

Shotts 0.9.1
- ⇧⌘4 captures too, for a keyboard whose top row controls the Mac, where F10 needs fn: turn
macOS's own ⇧⌘4 off in System Settings › Keyboard › Keyboard Shortcuts › Screenshots, and
Shotts answers it, and Option-⇧⌘4 brings the last capture back. Until then it stays macOS's,
so the two never answer the same press. F10 works as before.

Shotts 0.9.0
- Closing a recording window asks "Delete this recording?" until the recording has been saved,
copied, or dragged out; Cancel, or Escape, keeps it. Before, Escape after playing it deleted it. - Quit asks first when it would lose something, saying what: an open capture with annotations or
a crop, or an unsaved recording. With nothing to lose, it quits at once, as before. - The pointer is always let go when Shotts stops scrolling, even when macOS refused the event
tap that drops the mouse's own events; before, it could stay frozen.
Install with Homebrew:
brew install --cask shreeve/tap/shotts

Shotts 0.8.5
- Text starts where you click: the caret's foot is on the pixel clicked, rather than the text's
top-left corner, which put the caret below and to the right of the click.
Install with Homebrew:
brew install --cask shreeve/tap/shotts
Installed copies update themselves: choose Check for Updates… in the menu bar menu.
Shotts 0.8.4
- While Shotts scrolls a scrolling capture, the mouse is held: the pointer stays put and moving,
clicking, or scrolling does nothing, so a nudge no longer sends the scrolling elsewhere and
makes it give up. The keys still work, and the mouse comes back when scrolling stops: at the
bottom, or after 30 seconds at most, with what it has. - No haze on the "D" of Done: with keyboard navigation on, the button was focused as its panel
opened, its focus ring drawn around the title. Nothing is focused now, and a ring goes around
the whole button.
Install with Homebrew:
brew install --cask shreeve/tap/shotts
Installed copies update themselves: choose Check for Updates… in the menu bar menu.
Shotts 0.8.3
- Scrolling capture no longer leaves a row blank. Browsers draw what scrolls into view a moment
late, and the row first seen blank stayed blank; rows are now taken again until they have
scrolled well up. - A scrolling capture that backs up at the end no longer ends with rows from higher up.
Install with Homebrew:
brew install --cask shreeve/tap/shotts
Installed copies update themselves: choose Check for Updates… in the menu bar menu.
Shotts 0.8.2
- Scrolling capture is Option during a drag, as recording is Command: the selection turns blue
and reads "■ Scroll". Let go, and Shotts scrolls just that area to the bottom by itself and
opens the picture. Dragging just the part that scrolls, a message list without its sidebar,
is what makes a window with still parts come out right. F10 stops early. - Shotts no longer bobs up and down when it cannot follow an area: it stops and lets you scroll.
- Option-click no longer starts a scrolling capture.
- Shorter picker hints: "Drag an area, or click a window or the desktop", "⌘ records video
instead", the new ⌥ line, and the arrow keys last before Esc. - F10 ends both a scrolling capture and a recording, and says so: the scrolling panel reads
"Scrolling; F10 stops", and the recording bar's button "Stop (F10)". - No arrow beside the crosshair. When what was under the pointer changed as F10 was pressed (a
page loading, a list updating), the app in front put its arrow back until the mouse moved.
Install with Homebrew:
brew install --cask shreeve/tap/shotts
Installed copies update themselves: choose Check for Updates… in the menu bar menu.
Shotts 0.8.1
- Scrolling capture scrolls by itself: Option-click a window, with the pointer on the part to
scroll, and Shotts scrolls it to the bottom and opens the picture. Return stops early. It needs
Accessibility, which macOS asks for the first time; until then you scroll yourself, as before. - Option-click a window is the one way to start it: Option no longer changes a drag. The window's
outline turns blue while Option is down.
Install with Homebrew:
brew install --cask shreeve/tap/shotts
Installed copies update themselves: choose Check for Updates… in the menu bar menu.
Shotts 0.8.0
- Scrolling capture: hold Option as you let go of a drag, or Option-click a window, then scroll
what is in it and press Return. Shotts stitches one tall picture as you scroll, keeps a sticky
header or toolbar once, and opens it in the editor. Nothing scrolls by itself, and no new
permission is asked for.
Install with Homebrew:
brew install --cask shreeve/tap/shotts
Installed copies update themselves: choose Check for Updates… in the menu bar menu.
