Spring Boot circular reference when using websockets and hateoas

Basic websockets + hateoas + spring webmvc project with Spring Boot (and Kotlin). If configured this way:

A workaround is to move the @Bean definition for WebMvcConfigurer into a separate @Configuration class, but getting from the error message above to this solution is pretty non-intuitive.

This is well documented in the Spring Framework reference doc.

Thanks. Up until I ran into this issue, things have always worked with it configured via @Bean, making this a devilishly hard problem to debug. Perhaps there should be a runtime check for this with a better error message?
