ETCS

This page will explain how the ETCS system works and what each part means:

Now a few things before i start explaining:

-The system assumes your traveling straight unless you press either "A" or "D" to indicate turn direction.

  • The overlay shows up in the top right when enabled in the config. The Admin of a server can also globally disable it.

- 1 The Speedometer and Braking Curve.

In the middle the needle shows you the current speed of the train on a scale presented on the outside.Around it there is a arc surrounding the speedometer. This is the braking curve.Whenever approaching a lower speed limit or a red signal that curve will change to yellow and gradually "lower" itself down to the appropriate speed(20km/h in case of red signals). You should make sure you speedometer does not exceed the braking curve as that may lead to a passes red signal.

  • Gray - The Braking Curve is not changing
  • Yellow - The Braking Curve is dropping
  • Red - Your speed is higher than required by the Braking Curve.

Whenever Create Tramways is installed the Max allowed speed showed by the curve(When its gray) will be determined by the speed limit imposed by signs.Otherwise the max speed limit will be 300 or (0.4.5+) the max speed limit of your train determined by the Create Config .

- 2 The track condition view

Now this is a important part of ETCS, it shows you how far you have to the nearest speed signal and any speed limits(Tramways Required) on the way. From the example we can deduce that we have a bit more than a Kilometer to the nearest red signal indicated by the flag top-most flag with no number beside it.As you travel the flag indicator will move closer to the zero.In the occasion that the track in front of the train clears up(eg. A automated train moves out of the way) The track conditions will reflect that showing a new distance to the nearest red signal.

Speed Limits(Tramways): Whenever you have tramways installed and speed limits put on the track in front of the train the display will show you each of them as separate "flag" indicators with their appropriate set speed limit in km/h showed beside the flag.

- 3 Zoom in and out

Now theses are actually not clickable but they are there to show you that if you press either + or - it will respectively zoom in and out on the track condition view to see the track conditions up to 4 km ahead of the train. If driving high speed train it is recommended to be zoomed out. Zooming in is really helpful when driving into a station or when you have a lot of speed limits cramped beside each other.

Some Examples:

2025-04-06_01 45 26

Here The driver is around 700m from a red signal and the Braking curve is dropping, thankfully his speed is below it so he is safe for now

2025-04-06_01 45 31

Yikes looks like he has to start braking fast unless he want to end up in a crash, now with only 450 m to the speed limit the driver is way over speeding.

2025-04-07_23 27 16

Here the user has Create:Tramways installed and has a bit over 1 km to the signal. In addition he has 2 speed limit sings(239 km/h in 250m) and (179 km/h in 800m). He previously went over a speed limit sign limiting him to 240km/h as indicated by the braking curve being gray at 240km/h.
