 Your objective is simple; get an airplane to fly from here to there. In fact you can pose that as an optimization problem, with some constraints that govern how it works. There is no requirement to minimize this or maximize that. Of course you could try to minimize something, but you just want something that works for now. Later iterations can do fancier things.
