Can't use @ without using interlinking

Problematic behavior
A user reported the following
"@ now serves as a shortcut to link to a page, which is quite frustrating because I used this symbol to tag another user in the document, and that no longer seems possible unless I copy and paste the symbol (when I press Esc, it deletes the @)."

Expected behavior/code
When I type @ and then esc the @ should remain.

Steps to Reproduce

1. Type @
2. Then type esc
3. Then see the disappear
