Mac App Store vs. dmg file vs Homebrew

Hi there! I just discovered this app and it's amazing!

I'm curious though what are all the differences between the three install methods? I've noticed a few (like the App Store version doesn't feel as "snappy" for some reason), but I'm wondering if you can list them out to make the decision a little clearer/easier. Thanks in advance for your thoughts, and for all the work put into making this amazing tool!

Hi there! I am happy to hear that you like the app!

Choosing the right version is down to preference. The average user might not use homebrew, but it's nice to have the option. The Mac Store version is mostly out there to reach more people and might be – as you mention – a little slower than the other two.

I'd personally go with the dmg, even though there are no automatic updates, which the other two offer.

Makes sense to put it out in as many channels as possible! Any idea why the App Store version seems a little slower though… does it use a a different framework, is it not M1 native (I’m on a new 14in MacBook Pro), or is just me? Thanks again for your thoughts, and btw can I support the development in some way (like buymeacoffee) without being a developer myself? Thank again!!

Mac Store builds have some special restrictions, which require some special work arounds, that make the app slower. For more information on this you might want to search the electron repository.

Help is always welcome. In reaction to your question I freshly updated the contributing section :)

What currently costs me the most time is tending to community requests & discussions. So any help there is especially welcome :)

Great update on the contributing section! And good timing, since it's that time of year when I think a lot of people start to think about what they can do with their time and money in the new year. I know I'll be putting this project into my own considerations ;)
