LGTM! We should address the case that there are no commits at all at some point too.

Fix for the case where someone commits for the first time on a repository and so getting their previous commit fails.
I opted to choose the previous time anyone committed instead, which is probably wrong, but it should be right enough for practical purposes in my estimation.
