syntax highlighting is broken in safari

every time i look at this abomination of a browser i find a new completely fucked up way in which it is broken

Oddly it seems like referencing another CSS variable is the cause? In tokens.css:

--shiki-token-string-expression: var(--sk-code-string);

If I change this to:

--shiki-token-string-expression: red;

Then it works, but if I reference any other variable, it doesn't?

It works in Safari Nightly, so they fixed it. Just not sure what version of macOS they fixed it in :D

It works for me in Safari 18.1 (am on MacOS beta Sequioa 15.1)

This was unfortunately a known bug in Safari and was fixed in v18. https://developer.apple.com/documentation/safari-release-notes/safari-18-release-notes

Fixed hsl() and hsla() implementation to match the latest spec changes. (126722229)

However, it might be related to this feature too, if we're using it in our CSS:

We can just use old fashioned hsl syntax, no?
