Gnome 50

Hi everyone,

I’ve noticed that on GNOME 50 under Fedora 44 (Bluefin Latest), icons for running background applications (system tray / status icons) are no longer being displayed.
Is this expected behavior in the newer GNOME versions, or is something misconfigured on my system?

If this is intentional, is there a recommended way to re-enable these icons or restore similar functionality (e.g., via extensions or settings)?

Yes, I have it installed as a system extension. However, it’s marked as incompatible, and I wasn’t able to change that.

As a workaround, I disabled the version check using
gsettings set org.gnome.shell disable-extension-version-validation true

Are there any other ways to make it work properly or re-enable the tray icons?

I think we need to bump up the appindication extension version. This is working in other Bluefins so it's likely something we need to fix. Will investigate tonight unless someone gets to it first.

Hey @DFeise, this is the AppIndicator extension. The version Bluefin currently ships (v61) doesn't list GNOME 50 in its compatibility metadata, so Shell silently disables it on a GS50 system, which kills the tray icons.

Upstream fixed it in v63/v64. I've opened a PR that teaches Renovate to track these extension tags automatically so this doesn't happen again at every GNOME major: #4577.

Has bluefin been updated to v63/64? I just got the updates but have this issue. I'm on stable.
