Troubleshooting

"No such file or directory" during dotfiles-sync

For example about .gitconfig-personal. The shell is running the dotfiles-sync it loaded at startup, older than the repo, which copies a file that has since been renamed. The pull and the .config sync already happened, so:

exec zsh
dotfiles-sync

Since November 2026 dotfiles-sync continues with the pulled version after the pull, so this only happens once on shells older than that.

"sops-guard is not built: run dotfiles-sync"

Every commit stops until the Go hook is built. Run dotfiles-sync (it needs Go, and the network the first time, for the modules). To commit anyway in the meantime: git commit --no-verify.

"kube-guard is not built (dotfiles-sync)"

Every kubectl / helm command asks and k9s / sofka open read-only until the binary is built. Run dotfiles-sync.

Claude Code: "deny-sensitive-reads is not built: run dotfiles-sync"

Claude Code's Bash and Read are blocked until its hook is built. Run dotfiles-sync in a terminal.

"Please tell me who you are" on commit

The repo matches no identity: not under ~/work/, and no remote of the personal accounts. Set one for this repo:

git config user.email <address>

git stash and a pull with autostash need an identity too.

The SOPS keys are gone after a restart

On purpose: a log out or restart removes the keys sops-on left (a LaunchAgent at login). Run sops-on again. To turn that off on this machine: sops-login off.

The SketchyBar kube item doesn't use my KUBE_PROD_REGEX

SketchyBar never reads ~/.zshrc.local. Put the regex in ~/.config/kube-guard/prod-regex instead (see Kubernetes).

A Ghostty shortcut didn't change

Ghostty reloads its config with ⌘⇧, but a changed keybind may need ⌘Q.

dotfiles-sync warns "installing branch …" or "uncommitted changes"

DOTFILES_DIR points at a clone that is on a branch other than main, or has uncommitted changes: the sync installs it as it is. Expected while you work on the repo; switch back to main or commit when done.

Something else

dotfiles-diff -p shows how this machine differs from the repo; zsh -n on a .zsh file and shellcheck on a script catch syntax errors; the tests run locally and safely.
