Tip

You can flash stable and pre-release builds using Crossink's web companion app, Inky

Important

English is now the only built-in interface language. If you use another language, grab the separate crossink-languages download file from this release, add the .yaml file to your SD card under .crossink/languages and activate it from Settings > Language. EPUB hyphenation (other than English) also moved to SD packs, so install the packs for the languages you read in into .crossink/hyphenation.

Release Notes

Boox Picco support, SD card plugins, Syncing of reading stats and clippings via Crosspoint Sync, an overhaul of languages and so much more.

New

  • BOOX Picco support, with frontlight controls, slide-switch actions, tilt page turns, and USB Drive.
  • Install, update, and remove interface languages from the SD card. Missing translations fall back to English. Download languages from Settings > System > Device > Download Languages or manually add a language's .yaml file (see the crossink-languages.zip file in this release) to your SD card into a .crossink/languages folder.
  • Install, update, and remove EPUB hyphenation packs from the SD card. Download them from Settings > Reader > Page Layout > Hyphenation Packs or manually install the cphyph file to a .crossink/hyphenation folder. Book layouts refresh automatically when a pack changes.
  • KOreader Sync has been overhauled. Settings > System > KOReader Sync is now Sync Server. If you use CrossPoint Sync, your reading stats and clippings can now sync along with your progress. Stats and clippings sync are off by default, so turn them on under What to Sync if you want them.
  • New Sync Books in File Transfer > Sync Server syncs progress, reading stats, and clippings for every book on your SD card in one pass. After the first catch-up it only sends books that changed since the last sync. There's also Sync Reading Stats and Sync Clippings if you only want to upload one of those without touching your reading positions. These are only available if your sync server supports it (the default Crosspoint Sync server does.)
  • New Daily Reading Time stat that you can view under This Device on the reading stats page. It also shows your 7-day average daily reading time.
  • Sync a single EPUB's progress or an XTC book's reading stats from its Library or File Browser context menu.
  • On ESP32-S3 devices: fonts embedded in EPUBs can now be used. Choose Off, Ignore Body Font, or All Text in Reader > Font Options (globally) or from a book's Font menu.
    • To support the above feature, the built-in EPUB upload optimizer now lets you choose whether to strip embedded fonts. It's still on by default.
  • Calibrate each screen edge in Settings > Display > Screen Calibration to keep text and status bars clear of your bezel. Calibration is saved to the device, so it stays put when you swap SD cards.
  • New Character Spacing setting (-5 to +5) with a live preview, available in Reader settings and the in-book Reader Font menu. Word Spacing is now a -4 to +4 slider, so you can tighten it too.
  • On ESP32-S3 devices: new UI Fallback Font setting to display characters in book titles and filenames that the built-in UI font doesn't support like CJK characters.
  • On X3/X4: EPUB headings and publisher font sizes now render using the available bitmap font sizes.
  • Turn off image gray-scaling by setting the Images option to Display (B&W).
  • More status bar customizations: pick Small/Medium/Large text for each reader bar, set a separate global status bar text size, choose battery display (Icon + %, Icon Only, or % Only) per bar, and hide either reader bar without losing its slot assignments. Display > Hide Battery % has moved into each status bar's settings and your old choice carries over.
  • Select Chapter can now be assigned to shortcuts, Quick Actions, and touch gestures.
  • Finished books show a checkmarked book icon in the File Browser and Library.
  • The current chapter title now shows under the book title in the reader menu on button devices or in the pull-down drawer on touch devices.
  • On touch devices: adjust text selections with draggable handles and use the floating Look Up / Clip toolbar. Clipping works even if you don't have a dictionary installed.
  • For non-touch devices: Choose Legacy menu navigation in Controls if you prefer the old button navigation behavior in Settings and the reader menu where both the front and side buttons acted as up/down.
  • For OPDS downloads, you can now choose to use the server's filename. Missing or unsafe names fall back to Author - Title. Turn it on per OPDS server in Settings > System > OPDS Servers > Use Server Filename.
  • Settings > System > About now shows device, firmware, storage, and memory info. You can also export a privacy-safe support file to attach to bug reports (no network/device identifiers, credentials, or reading history).
  • EPUB fieldset HTML elements now render as outlined boxes.
  • Load Adobe-obfuscated publisher fonts on devices that support TTF fonts.
  • View release highlights in Settings > System > Release Notes
  • You can now center the in-reader status bars but toggling the Center Status Bar option in the Status Bar settings.

Changed

  • Large EPUBs index, open, and resume faster, especially CJK books using SD fonts.
  • Percentage jumps no longer scan every chapter before the target.
  • Dictionary lookups, cover thumbnails, sleep images, and boot images are faster.
  • OPDS Browser has moved into File Transfer, which frees up room for a Plugins option on the home screen of themes that show it (and when Plugins is enabled).
  • On X3, X4 Pro, and X4 Classic: menu button directions and the front Up/Down labels now follow screen orientation. Side buttons on sliders follow it too, so the upper button increases the value.
  • Sync Behavior > Ask every time is now Ask on conflicts. It only asks when your device and the server disagree.
  • Improved sleep image indexing and how randomization occurs.
  • On ESP32-S3 devices, the default indexing method is now Incremental.

Fixed

  • Opening long bookmark lists no longer reboots the device when memory is low, and saved bookmarks are kept if loading fails (fixes #892)
  • The last word before a nested EPUB quote or heading stays in its own paragraph (fixes #886)
  • Quick Resume keeps your book page on screen while the book reopens after waking (fixes #870)
  • Chapter Progress Percentage is available in both reader status bar slot pickers and web settings (fixes #859)
  • Preserve the selected SD reader font after browsing font downloads (fixes #855)
  • Image-only EPUB paragraphs keep the publisher’s centering/alignment when you override text alignment (fixes #856)
  • KOReader sync positions deep in long chapters are preserved correctly (fixes #853)
  • Touch devices can now select a Nearby File Transfer receive folder (fixes #850)
  • Words no longer get split across text chunks in long EPUB paragraphs (fixes #844)
  • OPDS book downloads on X3/X4 should no longer run out of memory, and large HTTPS downloads use less memory (fixes #836)
  • Hide the Cover Grid theme in web settings on devices that don’t support it (fixes #826)
  • EPUB images keep their colors and gray detail in Dark Mode (fixes #825)
  • Page-turn shortcuts no longer crash at the end of an EPUB or while a chapter is loading (fixes #822)
  • Dictionary lookup recognizes French words with contracted prefixes like l’histoire and qu’après (fixes #793)
  • Clippings on text with tight line spacing shows up correctly (fixes #893)
  • Reading that crosses midnight now counts toward the right day, so your streak is kept. Stats also survive silent reader restarts.
  • If an SD font gets damaged, the bad characters draw as blanks instead of garbage, and you get a one-time prompt to reinstall the font.
  • OPDS feeds with long descriptions use less memory and recover cleanly after a failed request.
  • On touch devices: swiping up from the bottom edge goes to Home again outside of books (swipe up twice to go Home when inside the reader).
  • Importing CrossPoint settings no longer turns normal word spacing into maximum spacing.
  • X4 Classic and X4 Pro: the “Sleeping...” toast shows again on sleep.
  • EPUB chapter ornaments are centered, and section-break rules stay hidden when the publisher hides them.
  • Failed File Transfer uploads are cleaned up so they can be retried, and a failed WebDAV replacement keeps the original file.

Notable updates from upstream Crosspoint

  • SD card plugins support. Enable it in Settings > System > Plugins.
  • On X4 Pro, X4 Classic, PIcco, and Sticky: static .otf fonts can be used from the SD card or uploaded through the Fonts web page. Variable fonts and font collections are still not supported.
  • Better EPUB publisher styling: drop caps, bordered and shaded blocks, preserved whitespace, and more CSS selectors. Scalable fonts also support mixed sizes in a line.

Caution

If you have LOCKED device, make sure to download and flash the correct .bin otherwise you risk permanently damaging your reader. Do NOT attempt to flash anything other than the .bin labeled for your device's model.

Unsure what device you have?

  • X4: Up/Down buttons are on the right side and you have a USB-C port.
  • X4 Classic/V2: Up/Down buttons are on both the left and right side and you have a POGO port. Your power button is on the right side of the device.
  • X4 Pro: You have a touchscreen with a frontlight.
  • X3: Up/Down buttons are on both the left and right side and you have a POGO port. Your power button is on the top of the device.
  • Sticky: If you don't know if you have one of these then you probably don't. It will not work with your X4 Pro and will brick it.
  • Picco: Your device says "BOOX" on the back.
