@waltwait waltwait released this 07 Nov 06:46

A new look from end to end, a flight passport, and tickets that can actually be read off a phone.

  • New design: every screen is rebuilt as a ticket wallet. Four pages, 總覽, 足跡, 航班 and 設定, under a floating toolbar with + for a new flight. Swipe left and right between them. Backup, restore, export and redrawing the fog all live in 設定.
  • New: themes, chosen in 設定. 灰藍 is the default, with 灰紫, 石墨 and 鮮紫.
  • New: flight passport on the first page: flights, hours, distance and countries, a stamp for each country with the tickets behind it, your most-used airports, airlines and routes, by year or all time. It only counts flights actually flown.
  • New: add a flight from a screenshot or a photo of a ticket. Text recognition runs on the phone and the picture is deleted once read. Only the flight number, date, time and seat are taken: the name, the booking code and the barcode are never read or kept, and nothing is uploaded.
  • New: flights are looked up from their number and date, and the date is chosen from a calendar. Lookup needs your own free AeroDataBox key from RapidAPI, entered in 設定 and kept in the Android Keystore.
  • New: flights older than a year, which the API will not answer for, are looked up on the same weekday near the same date this year. The route is real but the times are from a recent day, and the flight says so, so check the route before saving: a number may have moved since.
  • Improved: opening the map no longer resizes it or redraws the fog.
  • Improved: Noto Sans TC and Sora are built in, so the app looks the same whatever font the phone is set to.

Installs as an update over earlier builds signed with the same key. The first launch moves existing flights to a new storage layout.

Recording that survives in the background, fog that holds up when you zoom out, and buttons that answer where you tap.

  • Fixed: background recording ran without its foreground service, so the system kept killing the app for memory while you walked. After any restart Android refuses to start that service from the background, and the app never asked for it again. It now asks every time you open the app, and a "WorldTrace 記錄中" notification shows while recording is protected. After a reboot, or after swiping the app away, open it once to bring the protection back.
  • Fixed: zooming out fast made the fog disappear everywhere except a small box around you, and tracks off screen vanished until the map settled. Ground out of view is now drawn too (in coarse blocks), and the fog is no longer swapped out in the middle of a zoom out.
  • New: exports can be saved to a folder on the phone as well as shared. Android only lets an app write to a folder you pick once through the system picker, so pick a folder inside Downloads, not Downloads itself.
  • New: buttons on the backup screen and the timeline press when tapped, show a spinner while they work, and then show the result on the button itself. The area and distance roll to their new values.
  • Faster: walked distance is updated incrementally instead of re-reading the whole track, and the fog appears before the distance has been recomputed.

Known issues:

  • A fast zoom out still shows patches of map without fog for a moment, until the map has drawn its tiles for the new zoom (about a quarter of a second after the pinch stops).

  • Saving to a folder and the new button animations pass their tests, but nobody has tried them on a phone yet.

  • versionCode 5, versionName 1.0.4, minSdk 24, targetSdk 36

  • Signed with the project's release key, so it installs as an update over earlier releases. A build signed with a different key can only be installed after uninstalling, which takes the database and every metre of cleared fog with it.

Countries abroad now get counted, and a lighter backup screen.

  • Fixed: a trip abroad could sit uncounted for weeks. Places are named a few tiles per launch, newest first, but a rebuild refreshes old ground all at once, so ground walked in another country queued behind hundreds of tiles at home (one real case: fifty launches before the first foreign tile was named). Naming now takes ground nowhere near anything already named first, so a new country is found on the first launch after you update. Open the app once and it will turn up.

  • Changed: the backup screen no longer carries explanations. It shows the account, the state of the cloud copy, and the result of the last action; the confirmation before a restore stays.

  • versionCode 4, versionName 1.0.3, minSdk 24, targetSdk 36

  • Signed with the project's release key, so it installs as an update over earlier releases. A build signed with a different key can only be installed after uninstalling, which takes the database and every metre of cleared fog with it.

Zooming the map fast no longer leaves the fog behind.

  • Fixed: the map reports its position on every frame while following you, even sitting still (about 120 times a second on a 120 Hz screen), and each report made the whole map screen render again. An idle map no longer renders at all, which leaves a fast zoom something to work with.
  • Fixed: zooming in fast showed the coarse zoomed-out fog magnified into bright blocks of ground you never walked, for about half a second. The tiles around the middle of the screen now keep full detail at any zoom, and the fog redraws while the map is still moving instead of only after it stops.

Still there: while zooming out, tracks beyond what was last drawn can be missing for a fraction of a second, and a patch of newly exposed map can show without fog until the map engine has made its tiles.

  • versionCode 3, versionName 1.0.2, minSdk 24, targetSdk 36
  • Signed with the project's release key, so it installs as an update over v1.0.0 and v1.0.1. A build signed with a different key can only be installed after uninstalling, which takes the database and every metre of cleared fog with it.

Fog fixes, and far less work to draw the map.

  • Fixed: a route that came back round on itself cleared every ground cell it enclosed, walked or not. Ground inside a closed loop now stays fogged.

  • Faster map. The fog is now built only for what the map is showing, at a detail the zoom can tell apart, instead of for the whole world at once. Ground off-screen stays covered until the map settles over it, so the fog may take a moment to clear after launch or a long pan.

  • Tabs other than the map now load the first time they are opened, and the timeline is a list rather than a card for every day at once.

  • Recorded history now loads while location recording starts, so it still shows if location permission is refused.

  • versionCode 2, versionName 1.0.1, minSdk 24, targetSdk 36

  • Signed with the project's release key, so it installs as an update over v1.0.0. A build signed with a different key can only be installed after uninstalling, which takes the database and every metre of cleared fog with it.

  • sha256 14944f34b6b2c4d0b3fae3bbba78e3ffbbc0b33f770b3919201ba717ac00f256

Android only. iOS has never been built.

Background recording has to survive Android power management: if fog stops opening on long walks, check battery optimisation and, on Samsung devices, the sleeping-apps list.
