What is the issue with the HTML Standard?

You write that "auto" is the invalid/missing value default for the dialog closedby Attribute. But "auto" is not in the enumeration. Can you clarify this, please?

Did you read the definition of enumerated attribute? (To be clear, I'm trying to understand where the misunderstanding is to see if there's something worth clarifying here. We have many attributes like this.)

"auto" is not a valid keyword enumeration for closedby, but Auto is a valid state for it. States don't necessarily map to keywords. This means closedby has custom reflection rules for the .closedBy, and in fact it does: https://html.spec.whatwg.org/multipage/interactive-elements.html#dom-dialog-closedby. It calls the computed closed-by state, which says if the attribute is in the Auto state it can return either the Close Request state (which will map to "closerequest") or the None state (which will map to "none").

In other words, the Auto state will reflect as two different enumerated keywords, either "closerequest" or "none", depending on some logic elsewhere specified.
